This is a great post, Trent. Similarly, I never knew any of the details of my family's finances. But then again there wasn't really a budget set up, it was just money coming and going. Truthfully, I don't know where I learned my financial skills and effective budgeting. I'm excited to teach my kids about finances as they're growing up, because there aren't many things more important than that.

Great idea on the importance of family communication. I too never received any education on money and my family's finances were a secret and entirely dependent on Dad's decisions. My mom, at age 79, just got her first checking account so she could get some experience in handling money in case something happens to Dad.

In any case, what has helped our family communication about money, is our involvement in World Wide Marriage Encounter http://www.wwme.org which is a organization dedicated in helping married couples (and their kids) communicate better. My wife and I still have problems talking about money, but at least with the WWME approach, we can talk about money in a fair and reasonable manner. I look forward on including our 3 year old daughter in a subset of our family dialogue. Thanks.
