While it was exciting to find blog optimization written about at all, I do not have an understanding of the terms involved. This was a good basic goose to me to start really understanding what building a good blog is about. The Simple Dollar has been invaluable to me, especially in regards to handling the needs of my grown children with finance and their career choices. My blog has to do with the literary side of things, writing, reviewing, connecting to poets and theatre, not something specific. I know there is help in what I have just read here but I am at a loss as to how to apply it. I think sometimes when a person writes technically, even simple technical stuff, they do not realize how very much the average blogger lags behind in background. Thanks for being here and your generosity in sharing what you know, which is considerable and always professional. Rose

You have put into words what I have been suspecting as the truth for a little while. I have a fairly new local site that in the beginning, I optimized heavily for the 2 or 3 keywords and phrases I wanted to concentrate on. Now that I have gotten Google's attention for those keywords, I have realized that most of my traffic has come from my natural writing. Can I call myself an SEO Guru now? Seriously, this article may be one of the only articles I have ever read that expresses what I feel to be the truth in regards to SEO.

I wouldn't exactly say that search engine optimization doesn't matter, but it is secondary to content - as you mention. It's fairly easy to spend a couple of hours fixing the SEO on your site. After that it's worth concentrating on content. Still those couple of hours are time thare's extremely well spent.

I agree. By nature a regularly updated site that posts content on one general topic area will generate the keywords and links necessary to do the optimization for you.

One thing I would add to your list though is to use a google sitemap. Very easy to setup and once it is established it requires no additional work while helping google keep tabs on your site (not to mention some useful stats).
