Nice post.

Basically blogs are getting to the point where they're just about ready to replace print magazines. A lot of the issues you raise (relations with industry vendors, advertorials, corporate mags, independent players, branding) are issues that are identical to the ones "PC Magazine" used to face in the 80's.

You've made some excellent points. Ones I haven't seen eleswhere.

Cheers.

I like most of your predictions with one exception: The average posting rate of a successful blog will accelerate. True or not, I think that this change will be attractive in the short run but lose readers in the long run. As a feed subscriber, I get annoyed with blogs that post multiple times a day because keeping current with them means either more time spent reading overall or less attention spent to blogs that post only once a day. With time at issue, I think readers may choose to read ten different bloggers posting once a day than one popular blogger ten times a day. That, or each post "category" will receive it's own feed, allowing subscribers to narrow their focus.

Love the title of this post-- It definitely made me click in. Enjoyed reading your insights-- as someone who has been blogging for 2 1/2 years, I joined a blogging network last winter--blogher. We know have advertising and just signed up to have advertising in our RSS feeds.

For myself, 2007 is definitely going to be the year that I want to see my blog providing some financial benefits.
thanks for the post-- like you I too am participating in Darrin's Group Writing Project. Great fun.

I completely agree that group blogging will become a more focused trend. However I hope it doesn't increase the post rate, but rather boost the quality rate.

With many bloggers all writing on a common theme and contributing to the same blog, they SHOULD be less inclined to post simply because "it's been an hour or a day since the last one" and instead focus on spending a few days or a week crafting a really useful, well-researched and thoughtful article.

I've removed some A-listers from my feed reader simply because they had too low of a signal (articles) to noise (outlinks with no value added commentary) ratio.

I jointly blog about Google Maps with my co-authors on http://GoogleMapsBook.com so I've experienced the reduction in pressure first hand. It's a god-send.

Hi

Very intelligent Post. There is one point I think you missed. There will be a rising emphasis on blogging quality. Some of the very famous blogs I subscribe to flood me with a constant stream of low quality posts. I am getting to the point where I disengage from a blog because of poor quality posts. I think that as readers become more selective they will put more emphasis on quality then on quantity.

P.S.

I subscribed!
