I like the goodie assortment idea! I think I am going to do that for a party coming up where we are celebrating two girls birthdays at the same time! I think this will be a great gift and at the same time a money saver! I think I might throw in a 5 dollar gift certificate to somewhere like Bath and Body Works to make it have some more value!

Another great idea is a handmade card. SERIOUSLY. Regardless of age, a handmade card is nice, and can often be better than storebought. Recount a favorite event, and seal it in a nice envelope. Cards are even nicer with money inside, so if the person really want a $200 item, they’d rather have $5 cash than a $20 item they don’t really want.

Saving up for college myself, so for teens, give them a cheap (try a 99 cent store, or walgreens) piggy bank, and Sharpie on “college fund”. Dump pocket change into it. A dollars worth of pennies looks like a lot, and change is less likely to be spent than dollars (at least in my experience).

I have to second Jim’s comment. The RIAA sees things differently, and have gone so far as to argue it shouldn’t be legal to rip your own CDs. However there is are a bunch of independent labels that allow their music to be freely given and traded, and there is a lot of music released under the Creative Commons license which makes sharing it legal. http://www.legaltorrents.com/ is a site that doesn’t get updated frequently but has a decent sample of movies, videos, music, audio books, etc all released under the creative commons license. I actually think some of the music is pretty good, but I’ve got pretty wide tastes in music.

Another charity that makes a great gift opportunity is Donors Choose (www.donorschoose.org). They offer gift certificates that allow your gift recipient to choose which classroom educational project to fund, which provides an engaged giving experience rather than just a card that says “XYZ donated $X in your name.”

The RIAA would disagree with your analysis of the legality of sharing MP3s with friends–they go so far as to say that burning MP3s of your own CDs for your own use is not permissible under fair use, but has only not yet been a subject of litigation.

I don’t think the anonymity of Internet filesharing has anything to do with its legality or illegality–it has been pursued legally because of the *extent* of the sharing, not the anonymity.

The music memory stick is quite useful. I like it very much. I have one of my own and when I get out of the car … there you go, I use it on my ipod.
