I was born and raised in San Diego, but now reside in Philly where I can't get a decent fish taco to save my life. My advice to you is, Rubio's is good, but you MUST go to Point Loma Seafood for their fish tacos. They are absolutely delicious, and the way they double wrap them, two tacos really means you get four! You can sit outside and gaze at the San Diego bay while you eat. Oh, I'm so jellycakes right now!

You write "I used to think that the big key to saving money was to cut down on incidentals. Now I’m not so sure - " and I agree, sort of. Cutting down on incidentals is not THE big key but is is A key to saving money.

It's part of an overall attitude in which you should conside how your money is spent. I will celebrate my 25th anniversary this year. In that time our annual income has never been over $70k and we've lived comfortably, got one kid in college (can't qualify for aid so I'm paying from savings) and have paid cash for every new auto since 1980 yet our combined net worth is about $15k away from $1 million. Part of our attitude is clipping coupons, setting limits for spending including Christmas and birthdays, and sticking to a minimal allowance for spending cash during the week. Hey, worked for us.

Having lived in San Diego and now living in Kansas City, I definitely concur that you can't get good fish tacos outside of SD. That being said, as a previous poster said, Rubio's is the gold standard. Please FedEx me a Pesky Combo as payment for my advice... :)

Glad to hear someone else has done the old "ice the leftovers" trick when travelling! My wife always thinks I'm crazy and that I'm going to get food poisoning when I try this on the road.
