Today is the first time I visited your site. My oldest son sent me a link this morning after I told him that one of my 2010 goals is to lose a pound a week. I read with interest your post about having the same goal. Then I went on to read some other posts and came across your 'ten books' list. I've read several on the list and will check out the others. Just wanted to add a comment to the cookbook section. I also recently purchased my first copy of The Joy of Cooking and like the writing style and practical tips. Another favorite book that was recently published and that I love is The Pioneer Woman Cooks. Check out her web site www.thepioneerwoman.com I think you would enjoy it a lot. Happy New Year! I look forward to reading your posts every day - I just signed up to receive new posts!

I love Joy of Cooking. Have your read the section about "How to Skin a Squirrel?" I know, I know...but they definitely are thorough. They even mention that you don't want a little red one, the kind that run around suburban neighborhoods, instead they tell you to select the darker brown ones. In hard times who knows?

I talk about How To Cook Everything here: http://www.thesimpledollar.com/2007/02/06/dont-know-how-to-cook-but-want-to-learn-here-are-the-only-two-books-youll-ever-need/

Basically, HTCE is a better book for learning how to cook than JoC is. JoC is a more complete book and works well as a kitchen reference, but it's not as good as HTCE at teaching kitchen fundamentals.

I wonder if anyone knows how this book compares to How to Cook Everything by Mark Bittman? It seems like a similar concept... I'm just wondering if I should buy one when I already have the other?
