My wife and I made a four hour round trip to spend an afternoon with some friends, but their lack of cell phone ownership resulted in us missing them and thus wasting most of a day. I don’t really think it’s all in the advertising, my point was a switch from say a 0.5% rate to a 4.5% rate is worth switching banks for most people. But a switch from 4.5% to 5.0% is nominal for most people and isn’t worth it to ditch the ING brand to which they’re loyal.

Cell phones are not necessary unless you consider them to be. Who needs another monthly bill? That’s not to say that I don’t see their value in our society, but I don’t value them like others do.
