Perhaps my desire for more detailed information encouraged me to purchase this book when it was first released. I perused sections which were applicable to my family at first, and I have frequently returned to it for insights. My personal praise for her book is that I gained helpful information from each section which has influenced my retirement, home purchasing, insurance, and other personal finance strategies; although I favor a more simplified investment approach like that in "John Bogle on Investing."

I was with you right up until the very end..
I agree that timliness is the Achilles heel of a book like this, and this book would would be much better with a regular update, like the old encyclopedia yearbooks.
Quinn (or is that Bryant Quinn) also shows the reasons for the recommendations she makes. This gives the serious personal finance enthusiast the tools to decide if the new products that hit the marketplace are worthwhile. I hate to see one of the few books that tackles the real details of PF dismissed for that very reason.
Keep up the good work. Your blog does an excellent job on both quality and quantity.

This is one of my all time favorites, although I admit mine is copyright in the early 90s. It's one of the few finance books that I actually own.

It is dense, but it is very practical. If you need to know about anything in the personal finance space, it's in there.

saw this at the library and sat down and flip through it. Read a chapter or two and all I can say is that at times it was very specific and dense. I dont think I would ever read through this book on my own, it was just too much. The author should look into better organizing the information or something because it was just dead boring plowing through the dense information. I got bored and it was hard for me to keep focus. It almost felt like reading a dictionary.

I'm going to be gathering information to do a post on my site about paying for college. As such, I was curious what information the book offered on the subject. So, it was disappointing that 529s were not mentioned... In terms of saving, actually to a certain extent parents are penalized for saving in great quantities because financial aid takes this into account when putting together financial aid packages. And, for most parents, what are the options if saving wasn't started early enough or in large enough quantities to make it useful. You can only make the most of what you have...

It seems to me that the problem with a book like this is that it has to keep the attention of the reader. For the hardcore personal finance reader, I suppose that isn't much of a task, but for the general reader who is trying to learn about the subjects in the book, it would be almost overwhelming. They almost need to create a "Cliff Notes" version that highlights the key steps in the book. Or they could send everyone to your book review. :)
