Anyway, correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t almost all flood insurance only available though the federal government? I don’t know the specifics, but this kinda irks me. Private insurers won’t take the risk to build on the coast, abutting a river, or whatever; why does the federal government do it? I assume the reason is to increase the amount of productive land in the short term, but it seems like a long term foolish plan.

I live on top of a freaking hill but I have to have flood insurance. My hurricane insurance will cover the damage of a tree falling through my house due to a hurricane, but not any subsequent damage due to wind-driven rain (has anyone experienced a DRY hurricane?) that comes into my house from the hole left by the tree — that is only covered by flood insurance. Nuts, eh?

I lived in KY at the time and although we didn’t have a flood where I lived, we dealt with the rain and saw the pictures every day. Glad to hear some good (PF lessons) come from it.
