Thanks again Trent. Amazing story there on the couple living well with no $$ to support their lifestyle. Too often, I've seen this happen around me, mainly because people want to keep up with their peers....

With the exception of my bed itself, I've gotten all my bedroom, dining room table, patio, and living room furniture from www.freecycle.org including a stereo and TV, albeit over the course of a year and a half. I use an email filter to seperate out "offers" and it works pretty well. Plus it keeps things that people are already throwing out from going into our landfills. Congrats on the house. If you get into freecycle, I hope you have a lot of storage...

http://www.tuscaloosanews.com/article/20070519/ZNYT02/705190358/1001/NEWS06

A non-nag version of the same article.

It's sad really... they have no idea what they are doing with finances, and think it's ok to rack up 50K in debt in less than a year on non-durable items. They don't pay bills on time or take the time to really budget....

do people like this deserve our sympathy?

The NYT article is sad, I agree. They almost seem like a caricature of the Average American. Lamenting about how the debt never goes away "no matter what you do," while their four-year-old plays video games on the 42-inch plasma TV a room over from the remodeled kitchen. It makes me wish there were a way I could roll my eyes at them over the internet.

The NYT article is just depressing. What's most depressing is that they seem to honestly believe that they have to live that way.

For the dollar store post.

1 and 2 you should probably be passing on anyways as it easier just to recycle and use the cartoons.

3 and 5 can usually be had even cheaper if you have a real party supply store or warehouse store.

4 maybe they are cheaper... but even cheaper is giving your kids plain or recycled paper and let them be creative on their own!
