I loved the post. Very inspiring since I am considering starting a part time biz on the side while I work fulltime. I would love to see you do a post that elaborates on the research side of things and the technical aspects or decisions one must make when forming the business entity.

Trent,

You might consider writing an ebook and distributing it for free as a means to promote your blog. I love reading your posts and would enjoy having an easy-to-send document to pass along to others who struggle with their finances. Maybe you could even include hotlinks to some of your relevant posts. For instance, if you decide to post the chapters, then use the plugin that suggests related posts and link to them from there.

When you said, "Whenever I hear someone talk about how they “can’t” afford to save 20% of their salary and give any indication at all of making a living wage, I think “lifestyle inflation.”" it hit a nerve with me.

My husband makes a decent salary, but we are not saving 20%, despite leading a frugal lifestyle. Our reason for this is that we have two major areas of expenses that, I would argue, would not be characterized as "lifestyle inflation".

These are: sending our five children to religious day school, and having me stay at home to run the household.

We're very lucky and grateful to be able to do this. I guess this could be considered "inflation", as it allows the things we value most to float to the top of our spending.

I don't mean to argue. I just wanted to point out that sometimes, spending more than 80% of one's income is not mindless or frivolous. I know you knew that. I just wanted to pipe in and mention it explicitly, in case someone else, like me, felt a footprint on a nerve. (grin)

Saving money is important for us. It's value is in what it allows us to do. Thankfully, being frugal (and fortunate) has enabled us to accomplish some of our values. 20% savings is not one of them, though.

All the best,
CLKL

I bought the money savvy pig for my 3 year old niece soon after you posted about it originally, and she grasped the concept immediately. My parents never understood money, so they didn't teach us how to understand it. Hopefully the next generation can break the cycle. Thanks for recommending a great product. :)

I'm looking forward to reading some of your "book" posts. It would be nice if you could identify them with a tag or a category so we can find them easier. I'm assuming the writing and research involved will be more than normal.

You mention abandoning the book idea, but how about putting together an eBook? You may not want to go down the traditional publishing path, but there may be a market for your info. I know that I appreciate it.
