My husband and I and our 10 yr old daughter live full time in an RV. We have been in a rig of some sort for 3 years now. We have just moved out of our 31 ft Airstream (200 sq ft) into a very spacious 400 sq ft 5th wheel. I even have a washer/dryer now!

We love the small spaces and constraints on stuff. We dont ever plan on going back to a stick house. It is actually easier to live in the small space than a larger one.

With two grown kids and a 13 year old son at home, we don’t need a lot of room on a daily basis. But when the holidays and other celebrations come, it is bad! Our living room is small, and so is the dining area and kitchen. The bedrooms are a nice size, but I can’t ask guests to hang out there! We are trying to decide, add on or sale and buy something bigger. My feeling is I will not go into a larger mortgage than we have, My husband is about 17 years away from retirement. I don’t want to go into retirement with a mortgage, space or no space.

My wife and I and our 18 month old son recently ( a month ago) moved into our 480 square foot house. So far we are really liking it, but we have always preferred to be outdoors. I think what has made this place work for us, is that we designed it ourselves, and therefore, the places that we need are included, but rooms that we never used in our previous larger house were simply not built. So in a way, we have a similar house, but without all the things that caused us clutter. It also helps that the entire house can be cleaned in a matter or 15 minutes, instead of all day Saturday, which is what we used to do.

I used to use a crock pot quite a lot and one time I set it up with a nice roast, small potatoes, carrots and onions, to cook all day while I was at work. Unfortunately, I forgot that the person I was renting out a room to was a vegetarian. When I got home that day, I was greeted by the wonderful aromas of a great meal ready to eat. Only it wasn’t. Leaning against my slightly warm but turned off crock pot was a teary note. “I couldn’t stand it any longer. I may have to move out or give up my veggies.”

My family (which consisted of 2 parents and 7 kids) lived in a house with only 3 bedrooms for several years. My parents (and the baby) were in one, 3 girls in another and 3 boys in the third. Eventually, my parents added on one more bedroom, but we were still pretty squeezed in. As adults, we are extremely close – more so than most families I know, and I honestly believe that living as closely as we did has a lot to do with that.

My family of four has been living in a 700-sqft apartment for two weeks while we’re between houses. The kids sleep in the bedroom and my wife and I sleep on a mattress on the living room floor. The kids have plenty of room to play, inside or in the yard. The stuff that filled our 1,800-sqft house is all in storage and I can’t say that I miss any of it.

We’ll be moving into a 2,100-sqft house in a few days, but now that we’ve seen that it’s possible to live comfortably enough in a much smaller space (and much less expensively), I’m wondering what our lives would be like if we forsook the big house and went tiny. It’s an academic exercise, however, as we have a contract on the new house so we can’t change our minds now. Maybe in a few years…
