By default, the personal finance book I would recommend for everyone to start with is Your Money or Your Life, but it's not particularly strong on the basic mechanics of it. There are a /lot/ of books out there that are basically the same that are great for basic personal finance mechanics - this is one of them. It's one of the good ones in that group and you won't go wrong with any of them. The problem is that a lot of those books just present the same material as any other in that group, so it's pretty hard to distinguish between a lot of them.

Trent--I really enjoy your book reviews; it's unusual to find such detailed ones. But you often say something like "if you’ve never read a general personal finance book, this one is an enjoyable place to start."

What I'd like to know is--IF I have never read a general finance book, is THIS the one you recommend I start with? Or are there better alternatives? Is there a certain type of person who would do well to begin with this finance book, whereas most should start with your favorites?

I happened to stumble onto this book when I was just starting to put our financial house in order. I think it was a great find. It was easy to read and understand, gave solid (if conservative) advice, didn't have any "gimmicks" and wasn't trying to sell something. I recommend it as a "first" book for anyone just getting started.
