I think I was designed for the phrase 'bleeding heart liberal' and I'd be very unhappy in a distinctly conservative or right-wing area. I feel very sorry for your friend stuck in the reverse position.

Doing stuff that contradicts your personal values has got to be the biggest downer though. You can make lots of locations and financial situations work out, but going against your principles would be soul destroying.

This is very well-timed, I was just let go today. It was a preemptive thing since I had told my boss I was looking for other opportunities. They'll still pay me for another two weeks though, so hopefully something pops up before then.

Great advice! My dad initially went to college to become an geologist. Then, after some thinking, he realized that the places that geologists live, work and dig in are often not ideal for raising families. So he changed his major to civil engineering - which worked out well for me growing up :) One of the reasons I'm a software engineer is that it allows me to flex my schedule and my location - I can remotely work from Washington State, Colorado, or England as long as I have a fast internet connection.
