Trent,

Luntz's book has a critical flaw. Like advertising, it sells only aspirational messages; whether the implementation matches the message is a different thing altogether.

That is important for your audience here who are trying to wean off the wrong aspirational messages of cars, computers and flim flam.

& personally, Luntz is a repub hustler; never take advice from the oppo.

You're right, it is a population thing - I realize my comment could be read as implying an inferiority of Iowans to New Yorkers, but that's not what I meant.

Rather, when I think about how much value I get out of being able to surround myself with people who know their Plato, and being reminded of how difficult it would be to build up that same sort of circle of friends in all but a few cities in the U.S, my rent and other expenses here in NYC look like a pretty fantastic bargain.

Amy, it's more of a population thing. Likely, 1 out of every 1,000 people or so has read The Republic. In Iowa, it's hard to find that other person. In New York City, it's much easier because you can attend cultural events that may attract well-read people.

"How many of you have actually read Plato’s Republic? I have, but I literally am the only person I know who has."

This is why I could never live in Iowa.

Wonderful review, especially the examples. Perhaps we will go for a reading of it since it will help us learn the tricks of persuasion used to sell varied concepts.

In life we have found that most people respond truly to heartfelt honest communication. Our hearts somehow figure out that we are being taken for a ride when someone tries to persuade us into something about which we are clueless.

It is another story that our minds never listen to our hearts and always get us into a mess.

For now we are interested to see what tricks the modern minds use to "sell" their stuff.

Cheers,

Hi Trent,

Looks like an interesting book. One to complement it (and that was really fascinating) is a book called Made to Stick. Heartily recommend it.
