The Simple Dollar Book Club: Your Money or Your Life 30comments
A few weeks ago, I announced that a book club would be starting on The Simple Dollar and that the first book to be read would be Joe Dominguez and Vicki Robin’s Your Money or Your Life.
On Monday, October 1, this book club will begin. Here’s how it will work.
First of all, you don’t have to read Your Money or Your Life to participate. You’ll likely get more out of it if you do read along, but it’s far from a requirement. Feel free to offer up your opinions and thoughts on any piece, or just read the discussions and decide for yourself if you want to start reading.
Each day, I’ll read about 10 to 15 pages from Your Money or Your Life. I’ll announce what piece I’m reading the day before so you can read the same piece if you wish.
That afternoon, I’ll post an article outlining my thoughts on the piece that I read. I’ll outline the content of that section, write some of my thoughts, come up with a few rhetorical questions from the piece, and contribute my thoughts on those as well, finishing up with an indication of what the next piece I’m going to read will be.
These are intended for discussion. Think of it as a book club that I’m hosting, where I serve tea and crumpets and talk a bit about the last piece we read, then other people jump in with their thoughts. If you think my take is wrong, tell me so – if you had a completely different take on the piece, say so. Even if you didn’t read the section yourself, don’t hesitate to jump in with your thoughts.
Looking through Your Money or Your Life, I anticipate that this will take somewhere around a month. At the end, we’ll see how it went and decide whether it is of interest to tackle another book in a few months – or write it off as an interesting experiment that didn’t work real well.
Hopefully, you’re as excited about this as I am. I’ve often wanted to talk to others about a personal finance book as I’ve read it, and Your Money or Your Life is my favorite one. It should be fun.
Ready to get started? Before Monday, read the prologue. In my version (the common American paperback version that most of you will probably have), the prologue runs from page xxiii to xxxviii in the book. This will probably be the longest section that we read during the entire club, but it’s very easy reading.
The bookclub sounds like a great idea – we’ll see how it goes in practice! It should be fun regardless.
I’m in. I’ve read it before and loved it, but still haven’t gotten to the plus/minus step. Maybe this will inspire me to get through all the steps!
Sounds fun. I’m interested in trying the book club idea. (Never have been part of a book club before.) Will see how things go and stay with it if I can time wise. (I’m also waiting to get a copy of the book. Seems to be a popular book at our library right now for some reason. Hmm. I wonder how many of those 5 copies checked out right now will be used for this book club.)
Its a good book if you don’t mind, or can overlook, the strong left slant.
This is my favorite financial book. I’m looking forward to the book club.
I plan to participate. Like others, I read the book long ago and loved it – but I haven’t lived it. Am interested in turning over a new leaf, and your bookclub is very timely – Thanks!
I wish I had seen this book when it first came out, I would be in a totally different situation now.
sounds good.
Oh, I’m excited! I just checked this book out 5 days ago but haven’t started reading it yet. I’ll get on the prologue ASAP. Cheers.
I just bought it, new!, from Borders. I wanted a used/sale copy from Amazon but they promised to take weeks to ship it.
Ah well, I’m already on the spend-less-than-you-earn bandwagon, and this is a purchase I feel fine about making. See you in the discussion!
I’m in! I’ve haven’t done a book club in awhile, so it might take me some time to get up to speed. I got an older version of the book, so I hope the prologue is the same with this edition.
Sounds fun! I’ll see how soon I can get it from my library. It’s on my list. :-)
I’m very interested in joining the book club, too. I’ll go find this book later today and begin reading. I saw from some of the reviews that this is supposed to be a good, different kind of finance/life advice book- just what I need right now to further encourage me! I agree that it sounds like an interesting book for discussion. This book club is a good idea!
The book club is a terrific idea, look forward to reading along. Was able to find a used copy at a locally owned bookstore.
I’ll try to attend, but really just for the crumpets.
I’d love to have a copy but can’t find it here in The Netherlands! Any suggestions on how to (cheaply)ship a copy overseas?
And I want the tea. ;)
Seriously though, I’m in! Hope the edition I’ve got doesn’t deviate much from what everyone else has.
Awesome idea! I actually started reading this book about 6 months ago but gave up because I found it rather boring. :)
However, I have recently taken it back out and put it in my reading stack. I guess this makes for a great opportunity to start reading now! I think I can handle the prologue by Monday.
My copy just came in from the library. Count me in.
One question – will there be pie?
I suspect the tea and crumpets will be cold and soggy by the time they get to me :-(
Sounds like a great idea–cant wait to get it started!
Count me in on the book club. I need to get a copy.
I found a copy of the book at Half Price Books last night and read the prologue. I’m excited to participate!
Great idea! I’d like to join and re-read the book; I’ll probably get more out of it doing it this way.
Did I miss something? I thought we were starting today . . . I hope the baby isn’t ill.
I am thrilled to be rereading this book with a group. Count me in.

I hope that you mean ‘meaningful, divergent’ questions rather than ‘rhetorical’ questions. ;)
This is a great idea. I whish I had thought of it first. ;)
Pity the poor person who happens upon this site and then has to search for each and every review to find every chapter.
Don’t suppose you could link them all together?

This is a great book to start off your bookclub.
I read it many years ago and it is one of my favorites.
