I’m soon going to be taking a pay cut for more time off. We’re preparing for some changes next year! It’s time for us to prep for that new phase in our lives when we shun the rat race and try to focus more on the family. Here’s hoping we can handle it this way…

I agree with the others – I value my time off highly and if given a choice would absolutely 100% take a job that paid less but gave more time off. Plus, if you calculate hours worked and the actual rate of salary, there’s got to be some crossover point where lower salary + more vacation actually pencils out to a higher hourly wage than higher salary + nearly no vacation time.

My company is super generous with the PTO and I consider it one of the major benefits here.

No way would I ever choose a pay raise over time off. In fact, I changed jobs earlier this year due to the lack of time off available at my former employer.

My new job is slightly lower paid, but with much more flexible hours and more time off available.

I don’t miss either those few extra dollars or the stress involved with earning them.

Did anyone see the awsome comment drawing power the a 1 in 50 (at the moment, I’m sure it will be tripple that by friday) chance at a free book can draw? Do you blogger get paid by the comment? If so I think Trent should just raffle off random household goods to the readers! I am sure you have enough books to support this for a few years.

With any jobs I’ve interviewed for, I make very clear how important vacation time is to me. I’ve never taken a job with the “standard” two weeks, which to me is ridiculous. I’m pretty sure I’ve taken unpaid leave every year for the past three or four. It’s good to let your employers know how valuable you are, and how much you value yourself, whch they can’t if you’re dragging yourself in every day.

No way. Given the choice between a job with 4 weeks vacation and a job with 1 week vacation, I’d take the 4 weeks even if the pay cut was significant.
