@rhbee - I'm also in southern California, and had a similar realization this morning. Being faced with a potential evacuation makes you consider what's most important in your life. Is it the clothes, gadgets, etc that I own? Not even close. If evacuated, the only things I'll take are photos, my pet, and a few personal (and essentially worthless, from a monetary perspective) items. Interesting to realize that when it comes down to it, so many of the things I spend my time working for have little to no actual VALUE.

Lost somewhere in a santa ana wind-driven world of fire, I look out my window at 10 AM to a cloud darkened sky. Not five miles away people are losing what they have spent their whole lives working for as fires burn small towns, housing developments, churches, and historical monuments without a moment's concern. Disasters make work. Make working for something seem meaningless.

It's funny because we're so focused on earning a living or getting debt free that we never really think about what we'd want to do if we had the chance. I told the Wife again today, what would we do if we didn't have to work. It's something I have a hard time visualizing.

I'm off to explore teaching...I've kind of always wanted to be a teacher, but always thought my patience wouldn't allow it - or lack thereof, lol. Having a ten year old I realize that if you pick the right age group you're really teaching and they're really receiving....ah well...good post, I enjoy my work, but it's a lot of pressure over something I don't want to spend my life doing.

I think this section is right on the mark, but getting there is the hard part. Most of us have already traveled a fair distance down the wrong path in life so we have to correct that before beginning work on these broader changes. Not that we shouldn't do it, it just won't be easy. Oh how I wish I had read this book when I was about 20! :)

This was an important concept for Mr. Micah. He worked as a programmer but found it completely unsatisfying. He had begun to understand that his passion was actually teaching. Teaching philosophy in particular, but he worked as a math tutor during grad school and liked that better than programming.

I think it's great for him. As for me, I'm still discovering my right livelihood. But I wouldn't be surprised if I end up staying at home with the (potential) kids and doing some freelance/sewing/quilting. :-)

Brilliant. I've been thinking alot about this lately. I'm 20 years old and working as a systems administrator. I live to work rather than work to live. I can remember my first jon in the IT industry (not very long ago at all), asking co-workers how they liked working as the company. The most common was "Ah well, it pays the bills". Lucky for me, my opinion is far from this. I've grown up around computers & work with them everyday, however I think that if I found myself unemployed in the morning you could bet on it that I would still be doing the same thing.

Great blog you have, I've been reading from the very start. I've always meant to drop you a mail/ leave a comment but I usually pay a flying visit.
