I must admit that the book changed my life. I got a few years ago when I felt like I was not being valued at work. After reading it and completing the questioning I was blown away at how much the strengths were me. Two of them, competition and empathy, where always things that got me in trouble in my job. My bosses told me I was too compassionate with our customers and too competitive, always winning each competition and not letting others win?!?!?

After sharing this book with my boss, I resigned, and found a wonderful job where these traits are valued. I am doing the same kind of work, but the company actually uses this book to make sure everyone is doing work that meets their strengths and everyone can access others strength so we can best communicate with each other. Actually, my bosses boss brought up this book during my interview and when I told him that I already did it and how it made me rethink my current position, the offer was sealed.

I recently picked this up from the library and (just this week actually) contacted the Gallup Foundation like the book says to do when taking it out of the library. Apparently, since the "2.0" version was released, they have stopped providing user ID's for library users. Too bad. I was enjoying the book on CD while driving to work and now I'm not sure I want to bother with finishing it.

Our department head required all of us to read this and take the test (he provided the books for us). We're going to use the results as a basis for a half-day retreat in the near future - understanding each other's strengths so we can be a more productive team. I agree with your assessment of the book - good in parts but overall nothing earth-shattering. I enjoyed finding out my strengths, though - four of them I could have easily picked from the list, but the fifth one was a surprise - wouldn't have picked it but it made sense once I considered it.

Does this author cite anyone for his research? This is quite similar to applications of Meyers-Briggs and Howard Gardner's multiple intelligences. This is not new information- just re-packaged with a website.

I ran across his series earlier this year, but not much of this book jumped out at me. Many peoples' time would be probably better spent honestly evaluating which areas are their strengths and which are their weaknesses. Go Put Your Strengths to Work looked a bit more useful. After all, it's one thing to know you have a strength (I'm a fairly-skilled seamstress) but it's harder to know what the heck to do with it!

I bet you did not know, that this book is actually used by Whirlpool corporation in training managers. Whenever you are promoted to a managerial level, sooner or later you are send to a training with other like yourself.. But before that, you receive your copy and have to read it.
We might take it as a social proof - if it works for Whirlpool, it might work for any of us.
