POLR IS that good. I stumbled on this book some years ago by accident, and it is every bit as good as Trent says it is. Yes, there are a few tedious passages, but there are also some dryly witty passages which are a bonus and which make the book an entertaining read while imparting some serious concepts to apply to your own life. Also check out Fritz's book, "Creating," which covers some of the same territory, but with an emphasis on achieving goals in the arts, using the theories of POLR.

IF you liked that you should read the POLR for Managers it's much better and eaiser to use for companies. Same principles but they are from a business angle and it's been rewritten so there are some better examples, visuals, and concepts.

Your review seems to indicate that this book contradicts all the research in cognitive psychology showing that constraints and structure foster creativity. A simple example is the creation of the caesar salad. A person with unlimited ingredients is less likely to create a new recipe than one who is constrained by a limited list of ingredients. I plan to read the book.

I also agree that this is a book of the highest importance-however, the authors writing style is difficult-I'd like to see a condensed version of this book in order to really clarify his ideas. I have read it 3-4 times, and once attempted to outline it, but it was too tedious.

HOWEVER, Robert Fritz has written a much more useful and clear book since. It's called 'Your Life as Art' and I would strongly recommend that book over 'TPOLR'.'. Its basically how to apply the ideas in 'Least Resistance' to create your own life as a work of art. MUCH more accessible book...of course you could read them both, but I recommend reading 'Your Life as Art' first. Do it-highest possible recommendation .

I think I'll give it a read. I like the idea of changing underlying structures. I know I've used that at times to help me deal with stress. But only in small ways so far.

"You and the author of this book obviously know nothing about addiction."

And Kory has just self-identified as a troll. I made no comment on my own view on addiction in this entire article. The only comment was that a SELF-help group doesn't help - those are just people who have made a primary choice to not drink, but may or may not have made the fundamental choice.

A peer-based group, one where you choose to associate with people who are committed to the same life choice you are as a fundamental choice, does help, which is actually stated later on in the paragraph if you had bothered to continue reading.

Wow, you do such a tremendous job of summarizing, I hesitate to actually go out and purchase the book, though you've made it sound like a great read.

I think I have to buy the book though just based on the idea of fundamental, primary, and secondary choice. The way you framed that whole idea relates perfectly to niche, it would be criminal for me not to explore it further. The same goes for the concept of taking action to change our lives instead of just thinking about it. Thanks for the review!

I had the first edition of this book several years ago, lost patience with it, and discarded it.

The concept of structural tension and how it can function was extremely appealing, and I continue to find it useful.

However, in the first edition the author seemed to think that the only way to create something is to visualize the result in detail, and then execute that result.

He actually sneered (on paper) at people who create by entering their personal creative process without a clear idea of the result, but trusting the process to bring them to an interesting, perhaps surprising, and certainly worthy outcome. That is exactly the method that has been used by countless writers, visual artists, and composers for generations if not centuries. It's not the only way, but it is a valid way. I know this from personal experience as well as from reading extensively in the literature of creativity. Fritz seemed to be saying that all those other people have been wrong all along.

I would be interested to know whether he has changed his tune.

You and the author of this book obviously know nothing about addiction. In chapter 7 you/the author spoke about self help groups not working then gave an example of changing friends and places. That is one of the underling principles of AA. We (those of us with this problom) only have to change one thing, every thing.

The author should stick to writing about some thing he knows about and leave addiction to the addicted.

Wow. It's THAT good? Coming from someone like you who reads as much as you do, that means something. You're one of the best I've ever seen at summarizing a book and getting down to its core.

I'm guilty of the drifting charge as well as failing to make fundamental choices rather than just primary choices. I like how you personalized these ideas in terms of living a healthier lifestyle.

In my own personal situation, I've found myself ready to make the healthy living choice for the sake of my wife and children. I need to be able to play without getting winded, to perform some landscaping without dreading the soreness factor, to just be able to climb the stairs without stopping to catch my breath.

One question: there seemed to be two themes in your review of the book. 1.) The creative process and how it works, and 2.) Making changes and how they work. Am I missing something? Do you think there could have been two different books here?
