10 Things To Do Today 27comments
1. Play with a child. There are only 6,574 days between a child’s birth and their eighteenth birthday. Don’t waste a single one.
2. Keep that wallet in your pocket. Time is money and money is time - don’t spend either without a good reason.
3. Stop and smell the roses. You’re never too busy to enjoy the simple pleasures that life affords you.
4. Tell someone that they’re doing good work and that you appreciate it. Then tell their boss about it.
5. Do something you’ve never done before. You might have a hidden talent you’ve never known about.
6. Take a step towards one of your goals. You have goals, right? If you don’t know what the next step is, figure it out - that in itself is a big step.
7. Laugh out loud, and make someone else do the same.
8. Put some money away for the future. Anything at all, even if it’s just a dollar. One dollar a day starting at birth in a 4% savings account adds up to $120,000 at age 65. If you put away a bit more than that and just leit it be, you won’t have a thing to worry about when you’re old, just chasing a grandchild across the yard.
9. Tell someone you love them. Your mother, your wife, your child, a person who influenced your life a ton - whoever you love.
10. Do something unexpectedly kind for someone else, just to help them out. If they ask you if you want repaid, tell them to just do a favor for someone else.
If I can do all of these things today, and tomorrow, and the day after that, and the day after that - then I’m in the process of living a truly rich life.
That’s a lot of things to do in one day! I’m tired just reading the list.
I get a real buzz from doing #9.
Being nice feels nice :).
The first idea and the last were my favorite. The way I see it, as parents our lives should be totally devoted to our children - they are our legacy. Everything else is just a distraction, really.
Those are really good ideas. I do not think enough people stop and smell the roses. I like number 10 too. I definitely will try that.
I’ve done a few of those. I got to play with a great baby at work. He had the hiccups at one day old. Didn’t appear to phase him, he was just being adorable and looking all around at his new world. So cute!!! :D His mom was great too.
That was a nice pick-me-up and a reminder to live our lives…and not let our lives live us!…if that makes any sense! Sometimes we can überload ourselves with this finance stuff to the tune of wearing blinkers. I would also add, take the time to complement at least one person today…whether it’s how they look, what they did or at their job (as a boss or manager, when was the last time you gave an “atta boy” to a member of your team?).
“Stop and smell the roses.” - In January?
4. Tell someone that they’re doing good work and that you appreciate it. Then tell their boss about it.
Trent, YOU are doing good work and everyone here appreciates it. Not sure who your boss is, so just tell your wife that we really like your blog posts :)
Many of these ideas made me smile :D
Wow. Thank you.
I’m fired up!!
Trent, thanks for a great post. I am truly inspired!
Great post for me to read on this quiet Sunday morning!
Thanks. Have a good day. Go Patriots.

Great post - great list. I think we sometimes forget the simpler more meaningful things in life.
A good reminder! I am going to get off the computer now and start with #1!
I am facing a very busy week and your post made me feel better about it. I am planning and running our Junior High’s Valentine’s Day Dance this Friday, and in worrying about all the tasks I have to do (with precious few helpers!) I kind of lost sight of the fact that there is a REASON I take on these jobs — to make things nice for the kids and to help make my community a better place.
Thanks for a great reminder of things that matter.
I probably have done only 6 out of 10.
Thanks for the great post, Trent. We often get too busy, wraped up in our own lives to stop and “smell the roses.”
THIS is why I love The Simple Dollar. Thank you, Trent.
This is an excellent post. I want to live “this kind” of rich life!
Fabulous, the making of one of those credit card commercials, only the cost of these experiences is nothing–making it all truly priceless. Thank you!
Hi Trent, GREETINGS FROM ROME!!!
Your post made my day!
I find that your blog is truly inspiring. I discovered it about 1 year ago and you’ve contributed to modify some of my attitudes. Grazie!
If we all put this advice into effect, I think we would eventually overcome that overpowering modern problem of feeling of “is all there is?”
Whoops - In that last post, I meant to comment that I think we would eventually overcome that overpowering modern problem of feeling “is this all there is?”
I just love this! You know, we all get caught up in the daily grind and really do forget to stop and smell the roses. And when we forget to do just that, the rest becomes meaningless. Thanks for reminding me to appreciate the little things and to take a few moments each day to do something special for someone else :)
#5 especially resonates with me. When you do something new you expand the newness of your life making the next breath more enjoyable, next minute more unpredictable, and next lesson you learn about yourself more meaningful.
