Excellent review, Trent. I sense you enjoyed this book because the way you present ideas in your blog are congruent with the criteria for delivery advocated by Ogilvy.

Your two biggest strengths are a positive approach to issues and a commitment to accuracy. You do it seamlessly and the combination definitely engages the reader.

In teaching, we would call this "modeling."

Thank you for such a quality assessment. I look forward to more of your observations on material that helps elevate our efforts.

I fixed the Ogilvy-Mather thing. The firm's name was Ogilvy-Mather - I just switched the two last names around.

"It’s written by David Mather, one of the true giants in the advertising industry."

So much for accuracy! It was written by David OGILVY, not Mather, hence the name Ogilvy on Advertising...

I remember reading this book as a struggling musician back in 1989. It was a *fantastic* read, and I have to say truthfully I learned a lot about marketing myself and marketing my band from this book. Even after my music career ended, I find myself thinking back on this book regularly. Many of its ideas and approaches to writing and ideas are still very sound today. Great to see someone recommending this book. Maybe not as helpful if you are not looking to market a product, but I'd second the idea of getting it from your public library.

OK, I bought it! Looking forward to reading.

When someone this successful offers his thoughts on his industry and his career, it would be foolish of anyone with aspirations in the field to ignore it.

Hey Wonko - This is a great idea.
I know that I certainly have books that I purchased that I wish I had simply read once and returned to the library.
I have also checked out books from the library that I now wish I would have bought because I would like to read them again.
Thanks for another great review Trent!

I've been struggling with the "editing" part of my writing. I know I need to cut more out of the finished posts, but it's difficult! It all seems so important at the time. Perhaps this book will help that.

Thanks for the review.

Instead of saying "Buy or Don't Buy" you should rename it to be:
"Buy, Don't Buy, or merely just check it out from the public library".

For exmaple: My library has a copy of this one... I placed the request for it to be shipped to my branch/held for me online...

"when someone comes into your office badmouthing someone else, call that third party into your office and have the accuser repeat their accusation."

Sorry, but this is HORRENDOUS advice. It sounds good when considering how it will humiliate nasty backstabbers, but at the same time it will completely alienate non-confrontational employees who have legitimate complaints about their colleagues. A vital part of being a good boss is being able to have chats in confidence, without turning every grievance into a public spat.

This is a classic in the advertising field, and for those interested in reading more I would recommend, Pick Me and Hey Whipple, Squeeze This.
