Hoarding is a tremendous time (and space) waster for millions, so I think discussing it is very much in line with the aims of the book review. Trent, I suggest setting up a "clutter limbo" to help your wife let go of useless stuff. Instead of tossing things on the sly and risking her trust, put them in a cardboard box (perhaps from Amazon Grocery?)labeled "discard by" with a date one year in the future. It's a good way to let pack rats bid a tentative farewell while knowing anything we need or want will be available until the "expiration" date. The "out of sight, out of mind" tactic reduces anxiety and lends reassurance to the "What if I need it someday?" prone.

Thanks for the review. I attended a half-day seminar by Laura Stack on time management and she was WONDERFUL. She is very lively, engaging, energetic, and super helpful. She is very GTD-esque for sure, which resonated with me.

If anyone is looking for someone to speak at your organization, I recommend her. She lives in the Denver metro area, so she might be particularly attractive to people local to this area.

OK, gang... can we stick to the topic? The topic is a BOOK REVIEW. This is NOT an article on Trent and his personal life, so let's please comment on the book review.

This book sounds great because it seems to suggest things that are managable, not requiring humongous changes in a short period of time.

Thanks for sharing your reading.

This book sounds enticing for a self help book fanatic like me. I have put a moratorium on self help books these days, however. I'm still into non-fiction, but it's been about blogging, Wordpress, and html. If you have any good suggestions for those types of reads, I'd love to hear them.

Best,
Lisa

A long vacation is 4 weeks not 8 days, Americans work wayyyyy to hard and take way to short of holidays

Trent, your throwing out items you feel your wife is "packratting" also troubles me and I'm not reassured by your comment above.

You say that you suggest tossing something and "she doesn't like it one bit". So you then plan to toss it when she's not around. I'm sorry, but that's extremely disrespectful of your wife. You're doing something she's already told you she doesn't want you to do and you're deliberately doing it behind her back.

How would you have felt if she'd thrown out your Magic cards after you'd stopped playing with them but before you were ready to give them up?

You say that you're not tossing anything of "significance to her" but *you* are the one saying the items are insignificant, such as magazines. Maybe they're not insignificant to her. Just because you don't see the importance doesn't mean she doesn't have some kind of plan for these items.

And even if she is just saving items "just in case", you should still discuss that and reach some kind of agreement as to how many of certain items is reasonable to keep, rather than making the decision for her as though she were your child rather than your partner.

With the packratting, I'm mostly referring to stuff like copies of magazines from a year and a half ago or a box of empty glass baby food jars sitting on a shelf in the garage. Stuff that if I ask her about it, she honestly has no idea what I'm talking about, but if I suggest tossing it out, she doesn't like it one bit.

If I mention something and she looks like she has no idea what I'm talking about, I put it on my mental list of stuff to toss the next time she's not there, because if she is there, she'll "rediscover" this stuff and insist that we keep it, just to return it to the shelf to sit there.

I don't ever want to toss out anything of significance to her.

Eeeek. This is not meant as criticism; you are, after all, a stranger, and I'm certainly not in a position to assess your life or marriage. That said, the comment about your wife's "pack ratting" made me uncomfortable, probably because it hit a bit close to home.

I'm a pack rat myself. Maybe your wife isn't bothered, but the idea of someone "getting rid of stuff" when I'm "not paying attention" makes my skin crawl. In my situation, that would be a serious issue, something reeking of a lack of respect.

People can have different reasons for being pack rats, ranging from limited time to clear things out to emotional issues to frugality. It can also be the case that one partner simply can't relate to why a certain object, say a teddy bear or a stuffed moose head, is significant to the other person. I don't know if any of these fit for your wife, or if it's even a major issue in your relationship. If it is, it might be worth getting to the bottom of why, as in "why she's a pack rat". That in turn might suggest an approach for responding to it.

For my own particular set of issues, I've found the FreeCycle network helpful. I'm able to let go of possessions knowing that they're going to someone else who is probably frugal and probably won't just pitch them in the trash. Your mileage may vary, of course.

I would love for you to do a post on using amazon grocery. It seems a little pricey compared to our local walmart, but there are a lot of promotional pricing schemes that might make sense. I don't want to run the numbers on specific items, but you probably have! Any tips?

I keep from getting burned out on the PF books by alternating between fiction and non-fiction. I'm about to start a "Why smart people make big money mistakes" after reading a book on Astronomy and a James Bond novel. 2008 was my year to start reading. So far so good.

Thanks to Trent, I feel like I read an additional book each week. These reviews are so thorough. It feels like a buddy telling you about a book he read.

I first came over to your site via Unclutterer a few days back. I've really been enjoying the practical wisdom you share. Also, I admire the structure of posts like this: Short copy at the top, followed by detailed analysis including your personal experiences (which brings it home), topped off with buy-or-don't-buy. Just goes to show that New Yorker isn't the only place readers can find a meaty, informative book review. Great job! Your voice as a professional writer really comes through.

Sounds like a good book. I am starting a new quarter at school (and a whole new program, MS in Accounting) and am trying to create a workable schedule for myself. I recently started my blog and want to make sure I put enough time into that. I have no problem doing my schoolwork and studying, but I often do that at the expense of my other interests (like the blog). I am trying to figure out a way to be productive enough to get it all done, and not just focus on school things. I am thinking about trying a long morning routine where I blog and do things I enjoy, and then do schoolwork later. I think I need to force myself to do the things I like first.

Sounds like a great read. I've moved it up to the top of my library list, because frankly I could use some help in managing my time, and I'm a little burned out with personal finance books. Thanks for putting this review together, and for sharing your goals with your readers.

I was excited to read about your Amazon Grocery experience. However, the prices appear to be consistently 30% above regular and 50% above sale prices on common items that I buy. I'm sure the economic analysis varies by person, but it seems that these increases in price would rarely result in the best option even when including time, transportation, etc. especially if you are already traveling to the store for other items on a regular basis.

Oh and your wife's arguement is not taking into account opportunity costs.

For example, you may be missing great opportunities for future writing gigs or freelancing / speaking opportunities by spending your time doing household chores.

Often small business owners have to work at a rate *lower* than their employees for a couple years because time spent working on what you love is an investment in the future and an investment in future opportunities.

Nice review.

Talk about a time-waster. I wanted to Stumble this post - but they want me to fill out thirty fields in order to do so.

Screw it. I'll just email it to myself at work.
