I started reading this book awhile back because of the subtitle more than anything else. While it is an interesting primer on building a company it is geared more toward building a business that provides a tangible product -- something you can see, touch and feel vs a service which is less tangible.

I like the Harry Beckwith series like Selling the Invisible: A Field Guide to Modern Marketing and What Clients Love: A Field Guide to Growing Your Business a lot more since they focus more on selling moi and my personal brand and service more than a product that you can hold in you hand.

An excellent review, Trent. I applaud your ability to hang in there and summarize each chapter with both brevity and completeness. I don't know if I would have the patience.

I think you will be successful in your quest. Your command of the language and your expressive skills are excellent. More than that, though, you have an ethical and gentlemanly outlook.

I sense you identify very well with Masterson's central theme of making your mantra "all about the customers." It certainly shows in your topics for us. Also, you focus on positive qualities which effectively balance your courteous comments on issues you don't particularly like.

My girlfriend and her sons are huge fans of your blog. I'm thankful she introduced it to me.

You have the drive and the processing skills to generate ideas and integrate them into your plan. I think you are going to do well.

Thank you for such a quality site.

Was your link intended to criticize Radiohead or KISS? If you meant Radiohead, then, wow, I could not disagree with you more. How is offering your album as a free download alienating your fan base?

I've read a bit of Masterson's writing (and used to subscribe to his Early to Rise newsletter, before I couldn't take the pitches for copywriting courses anymore), and I have to say that he advocates a very specific type of business building approach. A lot of it involves growing large companies that make tens or hundreds of millions in sales each year. Personally, that's not interesting to me. If you're more interested in growing a business that is self-sustaining and can be kept small, the 4 Hour Workweek is a better read.

I was extremely happy to see this wonderful review of an entrepreneurship book on my favorite personal finance blog. I am in the stage between infant and childhood, along with planning my transition to self-employment and this book sounds excellent.

In particular chapters 15 and 16 are something I would love to read, because I often do feel quite conflicted on the ethical nature of marketing.

Please more articles on entrepreneurship. I like them a lot. Perhaps an article on when to make the “transition”? I tried it once before and made the switch to early, effectively crushing my infant business. I also like the book "Start Small, Finish Big" by the founder of Subway.

Someday I imagine getting into entrepreneurship myself, I hope, so what an excellent book to begin with.

Of course, my comments go directly to the marketing section (& many people do say a business is really all about marketing.) I found this to be way off base: "- I usually blame the large-scale marketers who carefully plot how ads can tweak people’s emotions."

OK, agreed. There are some pretty gross people out there marketing using very unsavory means...& it never lasts long! They may stay in the industry floating around, but this tactic doesn't last. It seems to be something people are rapidly losing interest in within the industry (despite outside perceptions.)

When you look at something I nearly call nouveau-marketing, or the really good older gents/ladies of marketing that have stood the test of time...these people are "large marketers" in every sense & do not use this lame tactic in the way eluded to here. Again, some more Seth Godin, Drayton Bird, Chris Baggott, & yes, David Ogilvy who was the largest of all marketers in recent history (just to name a very few) to tenor this section's tone would have been helpful & more accurate in my opinion. I've seen just as many small scale people preying on people's gullibility with lame approaches...and they usually switch up finding they can do far better with *real* marketing.

Great review, though.

I am not sure if I would take the advice of somebody who hasn't successfully started a company on entrepreneurship. On the other hand, if Andy Groove tells me what works and what doesn't, I will sit up and listen.

Interesting that Masterson advises the polar opposite of what Gerber advises in The E-Myth Revisited in terms of the quality of employees one should seek to hire. Whereas Masterson seems to advocate for superstars, Gerber says you should strive for systematizing all employees' job duties to the extent possible (this does have its limitations, e.g., a law office, but, even there, he says a lot can be systematized) such that average or even mediocre employees can perform those functions exactly the same way every time. So much for the employees' creativity!

Thanks for the thorough review!

As a corollary to the book title you refer, some of your readership may enjoy Ready, Aim, Specialize, a book about how to make money as a freelance writer focusing on a niche.

Kelly James-Enger's advice for freelancers could be construed for bloggers albeit the content is different.

I don't think of myself as an entrepreneur but that's why I started blogging-so I wouldn't have to get a job I had to drive to every day. I would like to know what book you think is good for a business in its "infancy."
