Agree, frankly the author needs to get over himself. We used de Bono's method at work. The main benefit to be had from this method is that it organises discussions among people. Often at meetings there are people present from different levels of "hierarchy". When "hats" are on, the playing field is leveled and license is given for all to express themselves without feeling stupid. It keeps everyone on the same page.

Other than that, I never really implemented it for thinking on my own. It just didn't seem natural.

First, keep the book reviews coming. They were one of the sites original strengths and continue to be. Second, I was recently in a class that taught these principles. Later in the class, people did refer to different colored hats, likely because we all had a similar frame of reference on the topic.

Excellent review. Personally I loved your long series on "Born to Shop" (or was it Born to Buy?). Anyway, your views on such a wide variety of books helps me range outside my usual reading zone. Thanks!

I just finished an older book by Edward de Bono: New Think, and my reaction was the guy has some exceptional ideas about harnessing techniques for creative thought, but his writing was so convoluted and laden with passive voice that it detracted from the book's great ideas.

And I definitely find value in your book reviews, keep 'em coming!

Very interesting concept. I find that I normally briefly wear each hat when making creative decisions in life, but it's good to see things layed out in a logical order and maybe this will prompt me to spend a little more time with each "hat" than I had previously.

I like the book reviews because I can pick which books would appeal more to me and which I simply do not have the desire to read. And that saves me time and money!

I like the book reviews Trent, keep it up, you save me so much time. This sounds worth reading as I too recognize the process and like the chance to put structure around it. I think using this method in a business meeting would be fine as long as you don't verbalize it, and lose all credibility. For example if you're pitching an idea, and you recognize that your boss has put on the black hat and is cautious about jumping on your idea, with forethought, you can be ready for that and counter with the yellow hat, best possible outcomes worth the risk etc. So recognizing the hat behaviour in others (whether they know it or not) can help you out.

I've been working for a $200M company for the last 6mo and read this book while I was getting my MBA. I then introduced the book to my team and asked them to read it. After we all had read it, we actually started to refer to the hats in our meetings. It was very effective in allowing us to compartmentalize and look at each project from many different angles. I don't think it takes the metaphor too far to discuss actual hats in real-life business environments.

Thanks for the book reviews, I love them because I can start putting the plans into action before I get the book or I should say if I get the book. Your reviews keep me on top of the new stuff out there, too much going on in my life right now to find new books. Like the hats though, a way to categorize what I am thinking if I see the book I will stop and check it out.

Good review. The Six Hats methods is mainly taught as "groupware" for meetings rather than for individual use. So if someone's criticizing a presentation, instead of negating the negation, you could respond, "That's good black hat thinking. Now for the yellow hat . . ."

Parallel Thinking is a sort of sequel to the book, and worth reading as a supplement. But de Bono's frequent snipes at the Socratic lineage of Western thought (the subtitle: "From Socratic Thinking to de Bono Thinking"!) are even more over-the-top than in 6TH.

I have had the chance to teach this book in a High Adventure Leadership class at BYU for several years and am now teaching it at EAC. This is one of the best thought out books of all time. I love it...I love it so much that I wrote a whole class around it as the main text.

It gets you thinking that all people do not think the same. That is very important in this day and age.

Keep up the goop posts.
