@Mitch: thanks for the chuckle.

I remember when I tried to do my job exceptionally. Then I realized it was getting me nowhere. In fact, I now spend most of my day doing my least favorite part of the job because I'm the best in the office at it (and no one else can stand it). Maybe I should let that bit go mediocre and become exceptional at everything else.... ;-)

Trent, I would like you to remove the photo of the book, as I received a nasty paper cut while reading a book one day. I can't believe how insensitive you are not to think of those of us out here suffering mental anguish at the sight of that book. And did you not even stop to think that there may be trees reading this site, you jerk?! This reminds me of the time I saw someone eating on TV and was reminded of how my cousin once choked while eating. How insensitive!

Same idea but I can put it into perspective a little differently- always add more value to it. Let's say your employer or customer are looking for 10 units of services, give them a little more. Give them 11 or 12 units. This will make any well-performed task into an exceptional task.
Cheers,
A Dawn Journal

My father used to say "always do what people ask, then do a little more than they expect".
That stuck with me. From the time I was a teenage babysitter to now, I try to do that. Bosses respond, and I'm always surprised at getting noticed.

Trent, what you said at the end about this book being too general strikes me as true. I haven't read it yet, but I have to say, this piece of advice really ticked me off: "Today, when you go through your normal routine of activities - regardless of whether someone is observing you or not - do every task exceptionally. Do it as well as you possibly can. Hold yourself up to the highest standard you can possibly reach. Then do it again tomorrow, and again the day after that, until the exceptional becomes the norm."

Um, duh?

Everyone would love to do this; if only it were as easy to do as it is to say. It would be nice to get more specific advice on making that more realistic (OTOH, "exceptional", by definition, cannot be "the norm"). Based on your review this author doesn't seem to be offering any of that, so I think I'll be skipping this book!

Thanks for the review!

Trent, nice review. This sounds like a book well worth reading. Even though these premises sound like common sense, they are still truths we need to hear repeated.

Michael Phelps and Shawn Johnson are probably the finest current examples of individuals who practiced intensely in order to perform remarkably.

Thanks for a solid review. Very objective. I will check this out at the library.
