"Many executive assistants are their bosses’ minority partners." Very true. I am not an executive assistant, but occasionally help with my boss's schedule and have heard all sorts of excuses (and pleading) from people on the phone who want a meeting with my boss. I prefer the callers who cut to the chase and yet are nice about what they want. And I've also found that in my interactions with executive assistants, they also appreciate honesty and being direct. No use beating around the busy or they'll just put you on hold or take your contact info and never call you back!

I I think its a great post, however, whenever I'm oon the receivng end of this stuff, if the "something in common" thing is not genuine, then it really turns me off.

What I mean is that if you are going to try to establish some common ground with someone, make sure you know what you're talking about. If you know the other person likes pro football, but you don't know anything about it, then find something else. When I get into this type of dead conversation, I am usually just waiting for the conversation to get into the next subject and I am wondering what the real purpose for the call is.

Yes, try to establish a link, just make sure you can talk to it intelligently.

It's a great article, and for me, 2 parts are especially relevant. 30 Seconds to get the listener interested, and finding someone that you nknow in common, for credibilit building.
