#5 I think your last statement might be an oxymoron since the definition of promiscuity is "Having casual sexual relations frequently with different partners; indiscriminate in the choice of sexual partners." By definition, there isn't much careful about choosing something indiscriminately, is there?

@4 Your definition of the "highest standard" is not really for everyone. I've often been accused of being excessively honest to my detriment. Promiscuity can be fantastic if practiced carefully and honestly.

"If you value truth, for example, a life filled with lots of little white lies makes your life unhappy and needlessly complex. Break through this by sticking close to your virtue. Eliminate those little white lies."

This rubbed me the wrong way. Virtues are universal truths, you don't opt in to the ones that you "value." Whether or not you value honesty, lots of lies will make your life unhappy and needlessly complex. Whether or not you value chastity, promiscuity will leave you heartbroken and possibly physically maimed. Whether or not you value integrity, living without it is no way to live at all.

This is one area where the same rules apply to everyone. If you don't strive for the highest standard, you'll be unhappy. Humans are not meant to live mediocre lives.

I agree with Trent if you are already living this kind of life, but it never hurts to be reminded of this stuff every once in a while--just to keep you grounded.

Sounds like a good book

@1 I'll never forget when I graduated college and starting working at a newspaper. Only having a 40-hour workweek, instead trying to take a full class load and work at the school paper full-time, felt like a massive vacation.

@article The author is right about time. What I advocate is doing a "time budget." Just like you would account for where every cent of your money goes, account for every minute of time in a month. Rank the non-essential items in order of how much you enjoyed them. Then start looking to chop the least enjoyable activities and replace them with things you enjoy more.

"If this new approach means cutting some stuff out, so be it."

That would be wonderful, but I can assure anyone that this isn't always a choice that makes sense.

Sure, I could up and quit my job, but what good would that do me? I've got school, which is a must to get through at this point, and that job is rather nice to have these days.

I also like having things I get to do, even if it means little time for rest between the fun, school, homework and job. I am SO looking forward to dropping the job & school for just one small career!! (And cutting back on those nearly 60 hours of work weeks.)
