It must be a good book if this can actually be accomplished in only one week.

It took me a little bit longer than that to unclutter, and it takes continual focus to stay there

One of my de-cluttering rules is to not buy books unless I can’t get it from the library and I REALLY need it. So this book will be added to the library list, it will probably take a few months to get it but oh well….

I was in a department store the other day admiring a olive oil can/dispenser, when I thought…I used to own one of these (we have moved between states in the last year). I was going to buy it, but thought, no…I wonder if I still have it packed away somewhere.

I asked my husband – he said, no, I think you threw it out during the move. Which would be unlike me, ’cause I used it and it was sort of expensive. Couldn’t figure out what I had done with it…until I went to get a pitcher on the second shelf of the kitchen cabinet where I keep our glasses…and there it was. We had been looking at it, day in and day out, for over a year. Clutter or no, sometimes it’s just hard to see past what’s right in front of your face!

Anyway, I’m not a physical clutter person, but the clutter on my PC is driving me mad! Does anybody have an effect way to manage favorites/bookmarks and passwords? There has got to be a better way.

Shouldn’t every day be worthwhile in enjoying time? Reading the book sounds only like motivation to do what you already know needs to be done.

Just toss the stuff in a box and drop it off to Goodwill/Savers/Salvation Army, etc. Use the 3 box method as described on this website and others – a “keep”, a “toss” and a “maybe”. If you just do it, it gets done. Rinse, repeat until less “stuff” is floating around. And remember that the new “empty” space doesn’t need to be re-filled.

Not all of us have “office” jobs either – just as a side note.

What strategies do people find helpful for decluttering physical stuff? I have a ton of small items that could probably be eliminated from my home, but I’m always paralyzed about getting rid of things because I might need it in the future. Any tips for moving past that psychological hurdle would be much appreciated.

I couldn’t agree more, Trent. I’ve read A LOT of books on de-cluttering and I wish I’d started with this one.

I also agree that it will take well more than one week to get through everything, primarily because the book covers so many areas of life’s clutter. I think this is a good thing, though. Excellent book.

Let me second your recommendation.

I was hesitant to buy the book at first because 1) I am a faithful reader of the blog and was worried I’d “read it all” before and 2) I thought I was already uncluttered. I bought the book to be supportive of Erin as a writer and found 1) 99% of the book is new material (she did reprint the great essay on hobbies and their detritus) and 2) there was still great advice on parts of my life that were still cluttered, including mental and activity clutter, and on staying uncluttered going forward.

Great book and great web site. (Yours is, too, of course, Trent. :~) Looking forward to your book, too!)
