I just finished reading it a few days ago, and found it fascinating. A really interesting point is that with many of the techniques the person being influenced doesn't even realize they are being influenced! Even clearly fake influences still work- TV laugh tracks make audiences rate sitcoms funnier. Running ads with a fake authority - such as an actor that plays a doctor still works.

It's amazing how many jingles and characters we remember due to advertising, even without wanting too. Also be assured, this has wormed its way into all literature and training manuals for sales reps out there, even if not directly copied. I know I've had all these tactics used on me over the years, often multiples in the same sales pitch. So forwarned is forarmed.

This is an absolutely fascinating read. I wrote my senior thesis in high school on the psychology of marketing, and most of my research came straight out of this book. Not only is it interesting, it's practical too: there's stuff in this book we can all use in our lives.

Great review! I used to be a counselor so this book sounds interesting to me and I will definitely look it up at the library.

In relation to "Reciprocation" I would also add that if you are given something for free you may feel that you "owe" (or need to reciprocate) that person which is why you purchase from them or like them more and why nothing in life is really free.

It is amazing how our minds work. Big companies always use social and behavioral sciences to manipulate the way we think, act, and take action. Readers also may like
The Undercover Economist by Tim Harford, which explores sort of similar issues.
