This is all true but also a little Machiavellian for my tastes.

**

There are definitely some situations where it doesn't work much. If you're around people with nothing much to give, you can give them all you want but won't get anything in return. (My brother once worked in a topless bar, asked someone to hold his keys for him because he was too drunk to drive, and later the guy just handed his keys back!)

Also, you could hang around people who have nothing to give that you actually want. (I like to hang around people with nice, big brains. Unfortunately, almost everyone with big brains around here goes into computers, in which I have absolutely no interest. Wanting to work in education, I have never gotten a single job through contacts. I have joined professional associations, but the branches in my town are strangely inactive.)

Excellent article, Trent! I have a friend who used to be uplifting and generous, but he has become relentlessly negative, entirely self-absorbed and unbearably dull. I feel bad about staying away from him because of how he used to be and all the favors he did for me years ago. I've been as supportive as I can for as long as I can, but he drags me down every time we speak. I've suggested he ask his doctor about depression or find a counselor, but he never takes any steps to help himself. I'm on antidepressants, so I really can't afford to spend time in his little dark cloud. Thank you for the last paragraph which made me realize he is probably turning away others besides myself. I feel terrible that he's mired in misery and dooming himself to social isolation, but I can't risk losing the progress I've made toward a brighter outlook and better life.
