If you are middle aged I agree they are going to do nothing for you, but since quite a few people that read this site are in college my advice to them, is attend all career fair type events you are able to. Chat up the people, try to get past the HR guy and talk to the actual employee they dragged along to get a read on the companies culture and values. I had never heard of my current employer before seeing them at a career fair, and now I’m basically doing my out of college dream job, with a clear path to my engineer with 10 years experience dream job.
