Been reading and enjoying your blog for a month or so. Really getting alot out of it but this post really struck me. One of those things I always “knew” but didn’t realize. Haven’t stopped thinking about it since I first read it. Thank you for making something very clear for me.

Thanks for a great article. I too counted on my future self. Now I am trying to have my current self lay a foundation for my future self. Have your read Dave Ramsey’s book. If not check it out.

Excellent thoughts. I did the very same thing. My father died in December, and about a month later I realized — my parents are no longer my financial backup if something major. I quickly did a debt analysis, opened two savings accounts, got on direct deposit for savings, and have now built up a $1,500 emergency fun, with much more to be put aside. A rude awakening and I realized that my “future self” is just me. Now.

I completely agree too. This is a message that young people need to hear more often. They are subjected to intense marketing and have access to credit cards as teenagers.
