It's so interesting to me that you mention GTD as a precursor to creating The Simple Dollar. I've had a similar experience. One of my first someday/maybe projects that I kicked off when I started GTD was "Acquire website developoment skills." I wasn't really sure why I felt so compelled to learn web skills at the time, except that I had an inkling that having some foundation would be helpful later on down the road. And just like that... blog six months later : )

Your mention of pets as great stress-reducers is great, as is your suggestion that folks go to a shelter for a pet instead of buying a puppy. I'd like to mention, however, that while shelters are life-savers, the shelter environment is a very stressful one for the animals kept there. The noise, commotion, lack of exercise, etc. is hard on the animals, and may make them fearful or shy about approaching a stranger. So don't just go for the one that "bonds" with you, talk to the staff for insight and give a chance to the wall-flowers as well.
