I like how you say that the IRA itself isnt an investment, just a way to move taxes around!

I'm a big fan of my ROTH, since I plan on making more money (so I'd prob be taxed more) as I get older. I use retirement accounts becuase they're easy, although I know some people might say index funds are better, I like the set it and forget it mentality with this.

I would have been interested in an evaluation of the claim on the cover ("cut your household budget in half") - is there any merit to that, or does it really only work if there's a ton of fat in your starting budget?

There are some good ideas here and I agree that if you want a great deal (not just a good one) you have to exercise patience and not be in a hurry to buy.
kjc has a point though, waiting years for some things may not be the best option especially if the thing in question would be savings you money. For example, I want to get a bike so that I can save on gas and insurance costs. It may not be best, in the long run, to wait for years to find a great deal on a bike when I could buy one now for a little more and start saving on gas/insurance immediately.

"I waited for years on a blender, for example, before finding the right one at the right price.

Really? Depriving yourself of something as inexpensive and mundane as a blender for years isn't frugality - it's miserly and, dare I say, for someone who's "deeply passionate" about cooking - foolish. You can buy a run of the mill blender for $20, after all.

Years? Really??

Saving money on travel is more being going on off-season times than being flexible. Every place has a peak travel season, a low season, and shoulder seasons. Pick the low or shoulder season and everything is on sale. Nothing is on sale during peak seasons.
