I think he means that he pays a premium for those items (ie, organic bananas cost $1/lb instead of $0.60 per pound for “regular” bananas), and he believes his spending would shift down a quartile if he didn’t purchase those foods.
Produce, per calorie, is more expensive than a lot of other foods, but I don’t find it particularly more expensive by volume. At least there are strategies to not spend an arm and a leg on it by shopping sales and whatnot.

In my eperience, most adults can handle a beverage with minimal risk of spillage, so I would have to say just let your friends keep their drink at hand. Depending on number and type of beverage I suppose, but Trent’s board game parties sound about as wild and crazy as reshelving books at the library so I don’t think that’s the issue.

Setting up a side table or two seems like overkill.

The # of persons in the households also varies for the different income quintiles.
lowest 20% = 1.7
second 20% = 2.3
third 20% = 2.6
fourth 20% = 2.9
highest = 3.2

Course its still only vaguely interesting to compare your spending to average household spending.

That said, my suggestion – and I’m not a blogger – would be napkins.

The only usefulness of this chart is to try to figure out which quintile your household income level falls in which isn’t obvious since they give no dollar figures) and then see how your food costs compare to others within that quintile. Ours are much lower than the probable earnings quintile we are in.
