I believe you usually join freecycle because you hope to collect some free things as well as get rid of your own stuff. If you're just clearing out, there's no reason to use it over craigslist or similar.

I don't have the trebuchet any more. It went *very* quickly. :D

Freecycle sounds like a good idea, but to have to JOIN to give away things, you're kidding, right? Craigslist doesn't demand a big song and dance to give things away to others. You put a quick listing under "garage sales" for the free stuff, post a photo if you feel ambitious, and voila! It's gone. You can also do an ad if the item is useable and put a modest price on it if you want to recoup a little of your invested money and / or time while painlessly passing on the item. I've given away small trees and shrubs (the taker had to dig them), furniture, LP albums, mirrors, picture frames, a set of charis needing work. It's so much nicer to know the things are taken to be used. This is an EXCELLENT way to get rid of bulky items the day after a yard or estate sale. There's something about the word "free" on Craigslist which is like blood in the water to sharks, and I mean that in the nicest possible way. I WANT SOMEONE TO COME AND TAKE THE ORPHAN STUFF after the sale to save me from having to carry it to the curb or pay for a dumpster. Free is great, giving or getting! Free can be great fun!

If you've actually got a trebuchet I would gladly take it off your hands - just the thing to assist in my efforts to sabotage the London Olympic Games. If you haven't... well, at least the freecycle admission policy was working well for a while.

I got rejected from my local freecycle at first too. I sent them an email asking them to please take another look at my case and make sure I wasn't being confused with someone else, since I had no freecycle history and no reason for rejection. I did end up getting accepted.
But while the theory's great, I haven't been too impressed with the execution myself.
Though I enjoyed the comments I received when I offered out a trebuchet...
