Worrying about the best way to give $5 or a few groceries is silly. $5 is not enough to destroy someone with a drug addiction -- it's mostly done so that the giver feels good about himself or herself. However, spending time and money on charity intelligently is also a good idea.

@#4 No one said that poor people are stupid. But when someone cruising a downtown parking lot comes up to me and asks for money for food, and I have food to offer instead of money, they can make the choice to take it or not. I don't believe honestly offering the food is the insult to their intelligence that you imply. They are, after all, begging and the choice of if and how to help is yours, not theirs. Their choice is whether to accept the offered help or not.

Q5 I'm with the folks on paying the babysitter, you don't know for certain that the wet diaper and crying didn't start two minutes before you arrived or not. That said, I agree with others that depending on your relationship (now or future) with the babysitter (neighborhood kid you like, cousin's daughter, etc.) instead of just cutting them off without reason you could, after taking care of your child, talk to them about how they missed the wet diaper and crying (even if it did just start before you arrived) and had there been a more serious issue they could have missed that as well by zoning out completely.

Q3 we were once selling at our market stall on a bitterley cold day and a young girl asked if we needed any help.
She was cold and hungry but didn't ask for a hand out, just if she could work. We ended up buying her a warm coat and trousers of another market stall(he provided them at cost) and bought her dinner in return for her help. We thought that that would be the last we would see of her and that the clothes would be sold as quick as a wink.
But no she turned up the next week dressed in the clothes we had bought her and we employed her properly for about 3 monthes.
We never found out very much about her , but guessed she had a hard life.
Then she didnt turn up any more and no one had seen her, we finally heard she had moved away.I am sure she made a better life for herself and we never regetted buying her food every day that she worked for us and extra clothes -on top of her wages.

I don't think there's any single best way to help people in need. There's a lot of value in giving to charities that help people (including ones who aren't right in front of you) on a large scale, but there's also a lot of value in giving to the people who are right in front of you (rather than hardening your heart and walking on by).
#10 I believe Vanguard's minimums for opening a target date account are $1,000, so that's much easier to reach than a $3k initial deposit.

Pick your brokerage company and save up in a regular ol savings account until you have enough to work with them. When you're talking about small sums of money it probably won't matter much

If you want to help homeless children, contact your local school and ask if there are needs for young people. Sometimes this is more direct method that helps your community in a more tangible way. Perhaps you can sponsor a teacher with additional funding to help them help children directly.

I have a sponsor who donates money for art supplies. I send photos of completed work. I also have sponsors for special trips. The weight that is lifted off students shoulders is awe-inspiring. I always encourage them to "pay it forward someday". Because I've been teaching a very long time, I have gotten to witness the later "paying forward".

Kevin said : "If a homeless person is hungry, there are shelters that give out free food and offer a warm bed."

For that point it really varies. Some areas have pretty generous and ample charity and government aid for the homeless. Some cities have very little free assistance available compared to the number of homeless people. So it certainly is not as simple as just going to the local soup kitchen. The local soup kitchen may be underfunded, already closed for the day due to over capacity or may not even exist.

Kevin,

"If a homeless person is hungry, there are shelters that give out free food and offer a warm bed. Every penny you give them is being used for drugs and alcohol. Without exception."

Really Kevin? Really?

Every single homeless person in the USA is a drug and alcohol user? "without exception" You can't honestly believe such a thing can you?

So 100% of homeless children use drugs and alcohol? Or do you also imagine that no children are homeless?

Not that your ridiculous claim even warrants refutation, but heres just one scientific study on the topic that clearly refutes it :

American Psychologist, Vol 46(11), Nov 1991, 1139-1148. doi:

"Credible estimates of the prevalence of alcohol and drug abuse suggest that alcohol abuse affects 30 to 40% and drug abuse 10 to 15% of homeless persons."

Keep in mind that around 9% of the US adult population uses illegal drugs and 50% of the adult population are regular alcohol users.

Clearly there are drug and alcohol problems among the homeless but it is nowhere near 100%.

Q10: You can start a Roth IRA account with Vanguard in the STAR Fund for $1000. I just did it this month. You don't have to start in the STAR, then convert it to a Roth IRA. Later on you can rebalance your portfolio in the Roth IRA, basically transferring those STAR investment shares to another fund. For that, I'm not sure if Vanguard will hold you to the 3K minimum or not.
Go ahead and get started if you can get the $1000 together. Perhaps your possible tax refund can help towards that goal.

#23 Kyle -
I agree. I personally think that my money is used much more efficiently and can help more people if I give it to the soup kitchen rather than giving it to people I see on the street. It will also help other people, people who aren't standing in front of me at the time. So I plan my charitable giving for the year in that way.

It is also a helpful thing to say when people call me during dinner to ask for money. If they send me some information in the mail I'll consider them next year when I plan my donations.

Q1 Robert : Employer 401k and self employment 401k are the same as far as tax deferal status. They are both 401k's and the IRS views them the same.

Q4 Daniel : I'm not a fan of throwing extra money into an underwater house short term. Reason being if worse comes to worse and you lose your job, go bankrupt, get disabled, pass away, etc within the next 1-2 years then any money you put into that home is effectively lost.
I would instead pile up your cash for the next 1-2 years. You could also check into the HARP program to see if you can refinance to market 4% rates. HARP allows refinance for underwater homes. That could save you a few thousand of interest in the next couple years.

Q5 : You owe her wages. So you should pay her. I would however make it clear what she did wrong.

Q6 : Your key question is how to prioritize retirement savings and college savings. Your priorities should be :
#1) Fund 401k up to employer match
#2) Then fund IRA / Roth IRA so your total combined retirement savings is 15% of your income.
#3) Lastly you can fund college savings account such as a 529.

Retirement savings is higher priority than college savings. You need to retire and have money available and there are no student loans for retirement. Not everyone goes to college and there are other ways to fund college. So retirement is first and college is second.
Funding 401k up to employer match is the #1 priority since that is FREE money that you don't want to leave on the table. You want to hit retirement savings goal of about 15% of your income so you can fund an adequate retirement. 15% is just a rule of thumb of course, but it works well for most people as a goal. We don't know your entire picture (your income vs expenses) so its hard to give more specific advice.

Q1 Robert : Employer 401k and self employment 401k are the same as far as tax deferal status. They are both 401k’s and the IRS views them the same.

Q4 Daniel : I’m not a fan of throwing extra money into an underwater house short term.

If you plan out your charitable giving, then you will have no guilt when people ask you for a handout.

If you are concerned about homeless people, then plan your donation amount and the best place to give your money. You can even plan on giving out money to beggars if you want to. Then when someone asks you for a donation, you won't have any guilt and can make a free choice.

Kathleen, maybe Sarah doesn't want to cut his hair, or is too busy, or is a terrible barber. Who knows?

I just hope that people who cut their own hair enlist the services of an impartial observer who will tell them the truth about how it looks!

#19 Kathleen, using clippers is so easy you don't need someone else to do it! my hubby had done it for years and I just do the "finishing" at the nape. This is great for the short "military" style that is still so fashionable.
