Works great if you can find someone with the same number of kids--we have three so it wouldn't be fair to ask our friends across the street who only have one. I found a couple of sitters on Care.com (couldn't believe there were that many young women looking for babysitting jobs!). I got 25 responses in one week.
But this give me an idea to offer to exchange sitting with my daughter's best friend's family--their kids are approximately the same ages as ours.

Well done, it also doesn't even feel to the kid as if he/she's being babysat! My parents had such casual arrangements with some of their friends, including one family that was 400 miles away from us! To me it was a sleepover or, in the long-distance case, a week-long trip to see a friend. But to our parents it was a night or a week off without the kids, an occasion to re-connect.

Great memories both for the kids and the parents!
