The oven drying trick sounds like a good way to start a bonfire in your oven! But since a good bonfire is my favorite way to spend a summer evening, I may try it anyway.

The shredding pile gets much smaller if you cut or tear off the pieces with personal identification on them. I do this while I sort the mail and shred them immediately.

This may not be for everyone, but we shred and then we vermicompost (worm compost). The worms take care of it.

I shred as I go (90% of my snail mail goes into the shredder or the recycle bin within 10 minutes of receiving it), but when I do a clean up of my filing cabinet I fill up paper grocery bags then soak with ligher fluid and burn them in my backyard fire pit.. easier than spending hours shredding.
