Willa- seems like working a few more years would be well worth an extra $18k annually for the rest of your life. You don’t seem to hate your job. 56 is still an early retirement and certainly not ‘too old’ to enjoy it.

Deane – You’ll probably have to find a way to earn more. Hard to give better advice without any useful detail. For all we know your definition of ‘basic’ includes a new car, iphone and cable TV or you could be living on $500 a month in a rented room eating ramen. We don’t know.

“Sell your home. Have your lowest wage-earner quit work and spend time with the children to eliminate the child care costs. Get a second job. Move to another part of the country.”

How does this work if one is a single parent and renting? No home to sell, quitting a job will remove the sole income, and moving is a) expensive b) really disruptive for parent and children c) likely to be problematic in itself as cheaper parts of the country are less job-rich.

For someone who is really struggling, this advice is like telling someone to save money by not eating caviar.

You can make pesto out of all sorts of things, some traditional, some not. No reason not to use oregano if you have it.
