If You Live in Central Iowa…

Watch the KCCI (channel 8) evening news tonight (Sunday) at either 5 PM or 10 PM. There’s going to be a story about me, my family, The Simple Dollar, and my book (365 Ways to Live Cheap).

I was fairly nervous during the whole thing – I’m not exactly comfortable in front of a camera yet. My wife thinks it will turn out well, though.

If I can find a video of the appearance online at a later time, I’ll add it to this post.

If you happen to catch it, feel free to leave your thoughts (positive or negative).

  3. Molly says:

Hey Trent this is Molly Nelson the reporter that came to your house today.
I just wanted to let you know that your story will likely air in a short version during out 5 pm news and in a longer version during our 10 pm news.
Thanks for letting us interview you today.

  4. tambo says:

  6. Tessa says:

They just posted the link on the kcci website. Really don’t know how long they keep these though.

Congratulations!! Will be checking out your book come payday…

  7. Jan says:

I’m in Europe. Somebody set up a torrent or something please. :)

  8. Marta says:

I can’t wait! Please post a link if you can since I am not in Iowa.

  9. felonypixel says:

Contact the news station, ask them to rip you a copy, most will with probably dropping a watermark on it for additional coverage for them.

  10. Carlos says:

You gotta see the new Star Trek movie, since some of it takes place in Iowa…

  11. Hogan says:

I am in central Iowa. I watch KCCI all the time, can’t wait to see it.

  12. KB says:

The news bit excited me about getting things in order. Made it sound attainable and not hopeless.

  13. Onaclov2000 says:

Trent, Congrats man, I do have to laugh though, your posts are like clockwork normally, and as I would imagine you were pretty excited about this upcoming event and posted at an “off scheduled” time, I don’t know why it’s funny but it is, either way AWESOME, you rock man, keep up the GREAT work!!!

  14. Indymoney says:

I’m regularly following you blog. Eventhough I’m not living in Iowa, I’d like to watch your show. Can you please post us the list once it is uploaded in the web?

  15. FMF says:

Wow, congrats! I was most impressed that your site gets 1 million visits a day (noted on top of the story linked to above.) You’re rockin’!!!!!

  16. Trent,

Congrats on your success! 1 million hits a day is amazing. Keep up the great work.

  17. frugalkim says:

Congrats Trent! Keep up the good work and thank you for writing this blog, it keeps me motivated to continue to live a frugal lifestyle.

  18. Micgo says:

The video can be found directly at this link:

It should be there indefinitely, assuming the editors don’t physically remove it from the database.

  19. Congratulations! I hope you get more media exposure. I’ll look up the link that Tessa posted after I’m home tonight.

  20. flybabymom says:

I certainly hope it will be available via video for those of us who don’t live in Iowa. Kudos, Trent!

  21. FMF says:

For those of you who haven’t noticed, you can see a video of the piece. Here’s how:

    1. Go to the link suggested above:

    2. Scroll down and look on the right sidebar. About one page now there’s a tab that says “most read” on it and “Huxley Man Shares Money-Saving Advice” is listed as one of the options.

    3. At the end of that listing, there’s a little TV camera. Click on that, and the video starts to play above.

At least that’s how I got to see it — not sure it will work for everyone and how long it will be up.

  22. Fiery says:

Wonderful spot on the news. Here’s the URL for the article/video on the website

  23. Tori says:

Even though I no longer have an address in Central Iowa, it was great to see that KCCI covered you.

  24. Trent says:

The “1 million hits a day” isn’t entirely accurate. The site actually gets over a million page views a *month*. The reporter got the bit juxtaposed in her notes, I think.

A million hits a day would put The Simple Dollar on the order of the Wall Street Journal. Although that’d be incredible, it’s not accurate in terms of how things stand right now.

  25. Patrick Dowd says:

KCCI-TV has now posted the video on their website. It is on this page:

Folks must have contacted the station and asked for the video to be posted. But, please! Don’t call and “ask them to rip you a copy”. In this day and age there are no warm bodies sitting around television stations with that kind of free time.

  26. Carmen says:

    Hey Trent,

You even managed to get the energy efficient light bulbs mentioned! Kudos.

  27. FMF says:

    Trent –

Hey, it’s been quoted in the press — that makes it a fact, right? :-)

If I had a penny for every fact a writer, TV reporter, etc. got wrong I’d be a ba-zillionaire. Just makes you wonder at the accuracy of much of the news we all receive.

  28. Just watched it – you did fine! (It’s not easy being on camera!) But you did learn from this, right? Don’t wear striped/checkered shirts on camera ;)

  29. Lis says:

I’m with Stephanie – 1. You did great! Youd din’t seem nervous at all. 2. yeah, no checkered shirts on camera. ;)

  30. Miss Marilyn says:

Ahhh yeah! Way to go. I liked hearing what your voice sounded like. I can put a voice to the writing now. My only comment is that when you were being interviewed in your backyard you swayed from side to side a bit. Plant your feet. relax your shoulders, and stay still.
