Ten Pieces of Inspiration #161

Each week, I highlight ten things each week that inspired me to greater financial, personal, and professional success. Hopefully, they will inspire you as well.

1. de la Rochefoucauld on hiding

“We are so accustomed to disguise ourselves to others, that in the end, we become disguised to ourselves.” – François de la Rochefoucauld

Putting up a false face to others can help us feel more secure, but it can also cause us to lose who we are.

2. Harish Manwani on why profit’s not always the point

Many of the ideas I’ve adopted in my life over the last several years started out because they seemed frugal, but they stuck around because they were important in other ways.

3. Bukowski on saving yourself

“Nobody can save you but yourself — and you’re worth saving. It’s a war not easily won but if anything is worth winning — this is it.” – Charles Bukowski

In the end, every positive change you make in your life is up to you. No one else can make that choice for you.

4. Victoria Falls

Lately, my children have taken an interest in the “wonders of the world,” so we spent some time recently looking for photographs of natural wonders that aren’t near us.

Thanks to Meraj Chhaya for the image.

5. Hermann Hesse on seriousness

“Learn what is to be taken seriously and laugh at the rest.” – Hermann Hesse

There is much humor in life.

6. Tolstoy on impact

“Only when a person sees himself in others will he understand his own life.” – Leo Tolstoy

I began to really see myself in others when I became a parent. It made me think deeply about the choices I make throughout my life.

7. Aurora borealis

We’re just a bit too far south to see this, though I hope to view it someday with my family.

Thanks to Billy Idle for the image.

8. Kennedy on reserve

“A child laughs when it feels joy and cries when it feels pain. Both things, laughing and crying it does with its whole heart. We all became so tall and so clever. We know so much and we have read so much. But one thing we forgot: to laugh and cry like the children do.” – John F. Kennedy

Allowing our true raw emotions to come to the surface every once in a while is a powerful thing.

9. Great Barrier Reef

This is a wonderful view of the Great Barrier Reef, thanks to Andrew McGregor.

10. Paul Kelly on quotes

“Quotes are just sayings of our own souls that formed through other mouths: part of a collective whole that makes a beautiful novel.” -Paul Kelly

A great quote is an idea I already believe in that’s simply expressed in the beautiful words of others.
