Each week, I highlight ten things each week that inspired me to greater financial, personal, and professional success. Hopefully, they will inspire you as well.
1. Steve Jobs on today
“For the past 33 years, I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself: ‘If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?’ And whenever the answer has been ‘No’ for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something.” – Steve Jobs
This quote gets me every time.
This is far and away the best tool I’ve found for learning a new language. Even better: it’s free. Even better: as you’re learning, you’re actually helping to translate documents. I’m hooked on learning French.
3. Dalai Lama on the behavior of others
“Do not let the behavior of other destroy your inner peace.” – Dalai Lama
People are always going to do destructive things. Don’t let that drag you down. Instead, focus on the good things, as they eventually overwhelm the evil.
4. The Beatles – While My Guitar Gently Weeps
This is the song that made me dream of being a guitarist during my college years. I bought a cheap used guitar from a thrift store and just made a mockery out of it. My family bought me a nice guitar for Christmas a couple of years ago, but I’ve not made much progress in terms of learning.
5. William Temple on humility
“Humility does not mean thinking less of yourself than of other people, nor does it mean having a low opinion of your own gifts. It means freedom from thinking about yourself at all.” – William Temple
Humility is choosing actions so that others benefit the most, regardless of your own benefit. I’ve found that a person who is truly humble winds up being deeply respected and valued by others.
6. Ira Glass on the world around us
“We live in a world where joy and empathy and pleasure are all around us, there for the noticing.” – Ira Glass
The media is constantly flooded with negative stories, but that’s not the world I see in my home and in my neighborhood.
This is just stunningly beautiful.
8. Samuel Johnson on life’s wasteful chase
“Almost every man wastes part of his life in attempts to display qualities which he does not possess, and to gain applause which he cannot keep.” – Samuel Johnson
Focus on making yourself better and the applause and qualities come naturally.
I love this little documentary about achieving the greatest possible result after many, many hours of practice.
10. Lao Tzu on thoughts and habits
“Watch your thoughts; they become words. Watch your words; they become actions. Watch your actions; they become habits. Watch your habits; they become character. Watch your character; it becomes your destiny.” – Lao Tzu
It all starts between your ears.
