We found the house. We walked through it and it was just right. It was also a home run on our checklist. Given how many we’ve already looked at, we kind of feel like this is the one. Anyway, on to some personal finance posts.

  1. Congratulations. I know the feeling, since I bought my first house two months ago. You look at a whole bunch of houses, and many of them seem nice, some more than others. But none of them particularly stands out. And then you find “the one”. You know it the moment you see it.

  2. When we bought our house about nine years ago, we had the same sort of thing happen. No checklists, but after looking at about 15 of them, we just felt immediately comfortable in one of them.

    It wasn’t until after we had pretty much decided to make an offer that I realized I knew the owner–he was the owner of a company that was a client of my company.

    We offered the asking price–which was reasonable–and requested allowances for carpet and some other repair. They accepted without countering.

    All in all, it was pretty smooth. Knowing the owner personally (and his integrity, etc.) took a lot of the uncertainty out of a purchase like that. (What if the inspector missed something major?)

    A tip for future homebuyers: rent a house for a year before you buy one. (Not an apartment, a house.) It’s a great way to build your checklist for the purchase. We didn’t accumulate a lot of musts, but we had quite a list of “must nots”.

  4. Congratulations! Buying a home is a wonderful and scary thing to do. A question I’ve got about your particular situation is, how are you approaching the financing? Are you going to put a large percentage down and get a 15 year mortgage and try to pay it off early, or will you put down the minimum you can for the longest term you can and invest the rest? I’m very curious as to how someone with your financial knowledge will approach this!

  5. What kind of breadpan do you use? Do you also use a breadmaker?

    I’d love if you could post some of your recipes and instructions. Homemade bread is on my list of goals to make this year.
