The Simple Dollar Weekly Roundup: Baby Prep Edition

Preparations for the baby are seemingly endless. I have a giant list of things to do before the arrival and it feels often like I add two for every one I manage to cross off.

One item I’m ready to add to the top of the list: a great night of sleep.

13 small things to simplify your workday The one thing that always amazes me about my workday is how much I can get done if I get into a flow, but how easy it can be to get interrupted and how hard it is to get back into that flow. (@ zen habits)

What am I Doing With My Life? I ask myself this question quite often. The answer is sometimes really enlightening, but it can sometimes be really painful, too. (@ soul shelter)

Tax Audit Red Flags I avoid most of these naturally except for the “wild swings in income” part. That’s par for the course when you’re self-employed, I think. (@ bargaineering)

How to Self-Diagnose Your Financial Health These are all good metrics for determining whether you’re in good financial shape or not. I tend to rely on the “change in your net worth” metric, myself. (@ get rich slowly)

A Simple Trick to Stop Spending For me, simply calculating the annual cost of a purchase really makes me re-think whether I need that purchase to begin with. (@ free money finance)

5 Simple Ways to Cut Your Spending and Still Enjoy Your Life These are some great tactics for people who are just beginning to reform their spending habits. (@ pick the brain)

I can completely relate. This past week I’ve painted the baby’s room, put together a crib and baby changing station, installed new storage in the garage, emptied the baby’s room – and my list keeps growing! Can’t wait to be a daddy, but all the preparation is tiring!

  2. Kat says:

You know what also takes up your time and prevents good nights of sleep? New puppies. Even the kind that don’t go around biting newborns!

  3. Christina says:

Congrats on the baby! We just had our second, he’s 10 days old. :)

I totally agree with you Kat! I’ve had cranky newborn twins and a puppy is just as much work! This summer we got two shelter dogs (both free because they are over 7). SOOO EASY! They came housebroken, good manners, no chewing and lots of love!! Please consider an older shelter dog.

  5. Kat and Kim, that is one of many reasons I don’t want a puppy! I’ve had four newborns, and I have no desire to go through all of that again. lol

  6. Elizabeth says:

Personally, I’d love it if you gave us your list of things for “Baby Prep”. We’re planning our first soon and are terrified we’ll miss something along the way.

    Thanks!

  7. Kara White says:

Elizabeth-I’ve found that you prep way more for the first than you really need to. I bet that you’ll have everything the baby needs when he/she comes.

Lay off the puppy stuff! It is truly none of our business, and he will get what he will get whenever he wants! :( grrr

  8. Michele says:

Trent- no parent gets a full night of sleep until the youngest is 5. Then, you sleep most of the time until the oldest is 12 (unless they are sick) and then you don’t sleep until the youngest is 22 or graduated from college and has a real job. I speak from “Personal experience”.
