Ten Pieces of Inspiration #170

Each week, I highlight ten things each week that inspired me to greater financial, personal, and professional success. Hopefully, they will inspire you as well.

I’ve been reading a great deal about Bill Gates in the last week, so this week’s edition is heavy with inspirational quotes from him. The work he’s done with the Gates Foundation has been amazing.

1. Bill Gates on uniqueness

“Don’t compare yourself with anyone in this world… If you do so, you are insulting yourself.” – Bill Gates

No one else has your set of traits and experiences.

2. Nicki Bluhm & The Gramblers – Little Too Late

I love the acoustic instruments here. It just comes together well.

3. Bill Gates on failure

“It’s fine to celebrate success but it is more important to heed the lessons of failure.” – Bill Gates

Failure teaches at least as much as success does.

4. Chris Hadfield on lessons learned from going blind in space

You have to work with what you have.

5. Bill Gates on inaction

“We always overestimate the change that will occur in the next two years and underestimate the change that will occur in the next ten. Don’t let yourself be lulled into inaction.” – Bill Gates

It’s very easy to see medium-sized changes that are in sight but completely miss the big changes far down the road. It’s really hard to start planning for those big changes, but it’s well worth it.

6. Bill Gates on

“I choose a lazy person to do a hard job. Because a lazy person will find an easy way to do it.” – Bill Gates

It’s usually worth your effort to find an easier way to do something you do regularly.

7. Anne-Marie Slaughter on whether we can all “have it all”

It comes down to knowing yourself, setting genuine priorities, and sticking to them even when the choice is tough.

8. Bill Gates on self-esteem

“The world doesn’t care about your self-esteem. The world will expect you to accomplish something before you feel good about yourself.” – Bill Gates

Feel good about your achievements, not your plans.

9. Laura Nyro – Gonna Take a Miracle

I just love her voice.

10. Bill Gates on work and dignity

“Flipping burgers is not beneath your dignity. Your grandparents had a different word for burger flipping: they called it opportunity.” – Bill Gates

Life is filled with opportunity. It’s what we do with it that matters.
