American Family is one of the top options for discounts, customer satisfaction, and more.

American Family is one of the top renters insurance companies, coming in at #1 for customer satisfaction in the J.D. Power 2019 Home Insurance Study. While the company has a lot to offer, it really stands out when it comes to its discounts.

The company offers all of the standard discounts, including multi-policy and full-pay savings. But it also offers some unique ones. You can save money by having certain smart devices in your rental, and you’re eligible for a discount if your parents also use American Family.

Best for customer satisfaction – Lemonade

Lemonade may be the new kid on the block, but it has quickly become a top contender in customer satisfaction.

If customer satisfaction and digital tools are your top priorities, this insurance company founded in 2015 might be right for you.

Lemonade is newer on the renters insurance scene, but offers plenty of the same coverages and perks as its competitors. The company offers competitive rates and standard coverages. It has impressive digital tools, including a website set up to get you a customizable quote in just a few minutes and a digital app that allows you to file claims and ask questions about your policy.

Despite being newer to the market, Lemonade really shines in the customer satisfaction department. The company was rated #1 in customer satisfaction in the J.D. Power 2020 Home Insurance Study.

Lemonade does come with a few downsides. Unlike other insurance companies, Lemonade doesn’t offer all of the same policy options like home and life insurance. As a result, you won’t be able to bundle all of your insurance policies for a discount.

Best local insurance company – Texas Farm Bureau

With personal touches like your own local agent, working with Texas Farm Bureau is like buying insurance from your next-door neighbor.

Texas Farm Bureau stands out as the one local insurance carrier on our list, providing a personal touch.

Texas Farm Bureau is a local insurance company providing property, auto, life, and health insurance to residents of the Lone Star state. This company offers a personal touch that others don’t. In fact, you can’t even get a quote without working with a local agent.

While this company offers the same standard coverages and discounts as its competitors, it lacks some of the advantages that come with national carriers. You can’t get a quote online, and may not get the same additional coverage options.

      Best coverage options – Nationwide

With coverages ranging from credit card protection to home improvements, Nationwide’s is sure to have your favorites on its menu.

Between its standard coverages and optional add-ons, Nationwide has some of the best coverage options on the market.

Nationwide offers some of the best standard coverages on the market. It comes with all the basic coverages, such as personal possession, loss of use, and liability. But it also comes with extras that other companies make you pay extra for. Your basic policy will come with medical payment coverage and coverage for any alterations or improvements you make to your rented space. Plus, the company covers unauthorized transactions on your debit and credit cards.

The company’s coverage options don’t just stand out in its renters insurance. It has a wide variety of other policy types, including homeowners, auto, RV, life, pet, dental, umbrella, and more. And the more policies you have through Nationwide, the more you save with their multi-policy discount.

If you’re a member of the military, you’ll want to check USAA renters insurance.

USAA consistently stands out as one of the best insurance companies in the nation. The catch is that the company only offers its policies to current and former military members and their families.

If you’re eligible to join USAA, you’ll definitely want to check out what it has to offer. Its rental insurance coverage rivals just about any other company, with coverage for nearly every type of incident ranging from natural disasters to vandalism. And unlike many other companies, all of your valuables are covered under the standard policy. You don’t need an extra add-on for your jewelry or electronics.

Finally, USAA performs consistently well in customer satisfaction. Though the company isn’t officially ranked in the J.D. Power customer satisfaction surveys because of its membership criteria, it always receives top scores.

How much does renters insurance cost in Dallas?

According to the Insurance Information Institute, the average annual renters insurance premium in Texas is $232, which comes to just over $19 per month. This rate makes Texas the 5th most expensive state in the nation for renters insurance.

The cost of renters insurance can vary significantly, depending on a few factors. First, the coverage you buy, the more you’ll pay. Opting for the maximum instead of the minimum coverage can be the difference of a couple hundred dollars per year. Your rate is also correlated to your deductible. The lower the deductible you choose, the higher your premium will be.

Finally, where you live will play a role in determining your renters insurance rates. If you live in an area with a higher crime rate or greater chances of inclement weather, you’ll probably pay more for renters insurance.

        Choosing your provider

One of the first decisions you’ll have to make when choosing the right renters insurance policy is whether you’d prefer a local or national carrier. While the national companies have more name recognition, meaning they probably come to mind first, the local providers have plenty to offer as well.

        Pros

        • Better customer service
        • More personalized services

Things to know about renters insurance in Dallas

Renters insurance is probably a good idea no matter where you live, but living in Dallas might make it especially important. First of all, those living in the Lone Star state have the greatest risk in the nation when it comes to natural disasters. With risks including flooding, tornados, and earthquakes, those in the state are often faced with costly insurance claims.

Another consideration of living in Dallas is the crime rate. After steadily declining for many years, crime in Dallas is on the rise. Having renters insurance can help to replace your belongings in cases of vandalism and theft.

        Dallas’s minimum renters insurance requirements

Texas law doesn’t require you to carry renters insurance, but a landlord may require its tenants to purchase it. Many assume that because they don’t own the property, they aren’t responsible for damage. And it’s true that in the event of a natural disaster or fire, your landlord is on the hook for the building itself. But your landlord’s insurance won’t cover your personal belongings inside your apartment.

Even if your landlord doesn’t require renters insurance as one of your lease terms, it’s still something you should consider. If your belongings are destroyed in a storm or a fire, then renters insurance will replace them. Without renters insurance, you’re stuck replacing everything out of pocket. At such a low cost per month, renters insurance is worth it.

        Dallas renters insurance FAQs

Renters insurance provides three basic types of coverages. First, it provides coverage of your personal possessions. In other words, it will replace any of your belongings damaged or destroyed in a fire, storm, break-in, etc. Renters insurance also provides liability insurance, meaning it covers you in case someone sues you. Finally, renters insurance provides additional living expense coverage to cover your expenses if your home is destroyed, and you have to temporarily live somewhere else.

In general, you should purchase enough renters insurance to replace all of your belongings in the case of a total loss. Start by taking an inventory of everything in your apartment and estimate how much it would cost you to replace everything. You may need to purchase special coverage for valuables such as jewelry or electronics.

If you have to file a renters insurance claim, contact your insurance company as soon as the damage or incident takes place. Companies typically have deadlines for how quickly after an incident you have to file a claim. Send the company any information it needs, and keep any receipts for items you replace.

Texas state law places certain requirements on insurance companies. Your insurer has to confirm that it got your claim within 15 days of filing, and it has to accept or deny the claim within 15 days of getting all of the pertinent information. Once it accepts your claim, the company has five days to send you a check.

        Methodology

        SimpleScore

The SimpleScore is a proprietary scoring metric we use to objectively compare products and services at The Simple Dollar.
For every review, our editorial team:

        • Identifies five measurable aspects to compare across each brand
        • Determines the rating criteria for each aspect score
        • Averages the five aspect scores to produce a single SimpleScore™

Here’s a breakdown of the five aspect scores and their rating criteria for our renters insurance reviews.

Why do some brands have different SimpleScores on different pages?

To ensure the SimpleScore is as helpful and accurate as possible, we developed unique criteria for every category we compare at The Simple Dollar. Since most brands offer a variety of financial solutions, their products and services will score differently depending on what we’re scoring on a given page.

However, it’s also possible for the same product from the same brand to have multiple SimpleScores. For instance, if we compare State Farm’s home insurance according to our criteria for the best home insurance, it scores a 3.8 out of 5. But when we compare State Farm according to the criteria for the best auto insurance, it scores higher, since the features the company offers can vary by the type of insurance.

        Discounts

We awarded higher scores to insurance providers with more discounts available on their website.

        Coverage Options

We gave providers with more renter insurance coverage options a higher score because they’re more likely to have a policy that best meets your needs.

        Support

We awarded higher scores to renters insurance providers with the most channels for customer support.

        Customer Satisfaction

We leveraged the J.D. Power Home Insurance Satisfaction Study℠ to see how customers rated their experience with each insurance provider. (If a provider wasn’t included in J.D. Power’s study, we skipped this aspect and averaged the four remaining aspect scores.)

        Accessibility

We awarded higher scores to insurance providers that have more online and mobile features to easily manage your policy and claims.
