The company is best known for offering life insurance, investment and retirement products, but it also sells various types of personal insurance policies. We reviewed MetLife’s home insurance using the SimpleScore method, which evaluates companies based on coverage options, customer service, discounts, customer satisfaction and accessibility.   • Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, MetLife announced in April 2020 that it would give auto insurance customers a 15% credit on their premium. It also expanded identity theft coverage and increased coverage for people delivering food or medicine in their personal vehicles for no added cost.

      What we like about MetLife

      Guaranteed replacement cost coverage

      MetLife offers guaranteed replacement cost coverage for your home and your personal belongings. If your home is destroyed in a covered peril, MetLife will help you rebuild a new one, even if it costs more than your initial coverage limit. This is an add-on coverage that will raise your premium, but the added protection could save you a lot of money if you have to file a major claim down the road.

      Great financial strength

      Because MetLife is heavily involved in finance and investing, it has impressive financial strength. The company has an A+ rating from AM Best, which puts it in the ‘excellent’ category. When you’re evaluating an insurance provider, the company’s financial strength score indicates how likely they are to reimburse you after a covered loss.

      Things to consider

      Few discounts

      One of the things that immediately stands out about MetLife home insurance is that there are very few discounts. We only counted four discounts that customers can take advantage of. For comparison, almost all of MetLife’s competitors offer more ways to save.

      Limited website information

      We also found that MetLife’s website is lacking a lot of important information about home insurance. There is hardly any information about the coverages they offer and the types of policies it sells. If you’re purchasing home insurance for the first time, MetLife doesn’t have great resources to help you through the process.

      No online quote tool

      MetLife doesn’t offer an online quote tool. In order to get a price quote, you’ll need to call an agent or request one online. However, it shouldn’t take very long to actually get your quote once you submit the request.

      MetLife vs. the competition

      Progressive

      SimpleScore: 4.2/5
      Progressive is one of the most popular companies for homeowners insurance, and good reason. It offers reasonably affordable premiums and a number of discounts. Customers can lower their premium by getting a quote 10 days before their policy starts, pay their policy in full, insure a new home and much more. Progressive can even recommend a contractor if your home needs to be repaired. We also like that Progressive has a great website with valuable resources, which makes it a good option for first-time insurance buyers.

      Geico

      SimpleScore: 3.4/5
      Geico is best known for its cheap home insurance rates. If you’re on a budget, Geico might be your best bet. Unlike MetLife, Geico offers helpful information on its website about home insurance. There’s even an online calculator you can use to determine how much personal property coverage to buy. Geico also doesn’t offer many discounts or coverage options, but you get what you pay for, and the policies are much cheaper than MetLife’s. Geico also has an online quote tool and a high-rated mobile app.

      State Farm

      SimpleScore: 3.8/5
      MetLife’s other big competitor is State Farm. Although State Farm is mostly known for its auto insurance policies, it also sells home insurance. Unlike MetLife, we appreciate that State Farm includes a lot of helpful information on its website about home insurance. There’s even an article on calculating how much insurance you need. State Farm offers four discounts, which is the same as MetLife. However, you can easily file a claim online, through the mobile app or by calling one of the 19,000 agents.

      MetLife’s home insurance rates

      MetLife doesn’t offer the cheapest home insurance rates. The company earned a two-star rating in J.D. Power’s 2019 Home Insurance Study, which looks at price as one of the main ranking factors. The only way to determine how much you’ll pay for MetLife home insurance is to get a personalized quote. But you’ll need to request a quote online or call an agent directly — MetLife is one of the few home insurance companies that doesn’t offer instant online quotes.

      MetLife’s home insurance coverage

      • Basic coverage: MetLife offers standard home insurance coverage, including dwelling, personal property, liability, medical payments and loss of use insurance.
      • Identity theft coverage: All of MetLife’s home insurance policies include identity theft coverage, which helps cover the cost of identity restoration services.
      • Guaranteed replacement cost coverage: You can purchase guaranteed replacement cost coverage for your dwelling and your personal belongings.
      • Scheduled personal property insurance: Homeowners who keep valuables like jewelry or art in their homes can purchase additional coverage for added protection.

      Metlife’s home insurance discounts

      • Home safety features: If you have certain safety features in your home, like a security system, deadbolt locks and automatic sprinkler system, you qualify for savings.
      • Policy bundling: MetLife customers who bundle their home and auto insurance policy can get a lower premium.
      • Group discounts: MetLife offers some group discounts based on your employer and membership associations you’re involved with.

        How to submit a home insurance claim with MetLife

        MetLife doesn’t offer online claim handling for homeowners insurance, so you’ll need to contact the company directly if you experience a covered loss. Here are the steps you should take.

        1. Call MetLife’s 24/7 claims hotline at 1-800-854-6011.
        2. Provide information about the claim, and get the necessary paperwork from a claims specialist.
        3. Complete and send back paperwork along with photos and videos of the damage, a written list of damaged or destroyed items by room and any receipts for emergency repairs.
        4. Wait for your claim to get approved. Depending on the severity of the loss, an adjuster may be sent to your home to assess the damage in-person.

        MetLife online and mobile app

        MetLife has very few online resources, which is why it’s not the best option for a first-time home insurance buyer. We did find a short FAQ section on the website with information about filing a claim, making changes to your policy and lowering your premium. There’s no online chat tool, online claims reporting or online quote tool. MetLife does have a mobile app, but unfortunately, most features aren’t available to home insurance policyholders. On the app, you can only view your policy documents or pay your bill.

        MetLife home, auto and life

        MetLife offers a variety of other insurance products, including auto, renters, boat, life, accident, health, dental, vision, disability, pet, long-term care insurance and more. Policyholders can bundle their home and auto insurance policies for a discount.
