MOHELA Student Loan Servicer Review
When you take out a student loan, you may be surprised to know that your loan often is handled by a separate third-party company known as a student loan servicer. MOHELA is a well-known servicer that handles some of the best student loans for the government and companies across the industry. For example, if you get a student loan through SoFi, it will most likely be handled by MOHELA.
MOHELA was founded in 1981 and is headquartered in Chesterfield, MO, with offices in Columbia, MO, and Washington, DC. The company is run by CEO Raymond H. Bayer Jr., who has been with the company for over 35 years and has been CEO since 2006.
Paying back loans with MOHELA
MOHELA loans come with an extensive list of flexible and diverse payment options to stay up-to-date on your financial obligations.
- MOHELA auto-debit program — You can link your third-party bank account to MOHELA to have your payments automatically deducted from your account. With some lenders, you may also be able to qualify for a 0.25% MOHELA student loan rate reduction as a thank you for using the auto-debit program.
- Pay online — You’re able to make one-time payments online through your account at the MOHELA website.
- Pay over the phone — The company offers the ability to make your payments over the phone through an automated phone system. The phone numbers to do this are 888.866.4352 (toll-free) or 636.532.0600 (international).
- Online bill pay through your bank — MOHELA integrates with most banks that offer online bill-paying services. Additionally, dedicated bill pay service companies also integrate for a more streamlined approach to paying off your MOHELA student loans.
- Mail a check — If you want a less high-tech way of paying, you can always mail a check to the company. If you do, ensure you include your 10-digit account number with the submission. You will need to call the company to see which location to mail your check to. Also, keep in mind that this is the slowest option, which you should consider when scheduling out your payments.
Note that all of these options require that your payment comes from a U.S. financial institution, and your payments need to be in U.S. currency.
If you’re having trouble making your payments, you always have the option of changing your repayment plan. To do this, you will need to apply on StudentAid.gov. One of the more popular repayment options is the income-driven repayment plan. You will need to have information about your last year’s taxes for this option. You can request it directly from the IRS through the website.

MOHELA student loan consolidation
Student loan servicer MOHELA offers you the ability to consolidate all of your outstanding student loans into one single loan. The benefits of doing this include having only one monthly payment, eliminating any variable interest rates and possibly cutting down on your interest costs or the size of your payment, whichever is your ideal consolidation goal.
When you choose to consolidate with the MOHELA student finance department, you’ll gain some nice perks. First, the company charges no fees to complete your loan consolidation. Second, you get access to special repayment plans through the company that might not have been available to you on your other loans. Third, you’ll gain access to the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PLSF) program if you have an outstanding loan that was previously not eligible.
If you’re interested in MOHELA student loans for consolidation, you can apply through the StudentAid.gov website. When you choose your loan servicer, MOHELA is one of the available options to choose from. Additionally, you can apply for consolidation by completing a paper application and attaching a letter requesting MOHELA to be your servicer.
The student loan consolidation process with MOHELA takes on average four to six weeks from the time you submit your application.
MOHELA student loan forgiveness programs
There are several options available through MOHELA for student loan forgiveness programs.
- Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) — Several different public service jobs may make you eligible for loan forgiveness. You will need to meet the eligibility requirements, have worked in an eligible position and have made at least 120 payments on your loan.
- Teacher Loan Forgiveness — There may be forgiveness options for teachers who work in eligible low-income areas or agencies.
- Closed School Discharge — You might be able to get relief if the school you attend closes while you’re a student or shortly after you graduate (within 120 days).
- Disability Discharge — People who are “totally and permanently disabled,” or veterans disabled from a service-related injury may qualify for student loan forgiveness.
- Death Discharge — If the person who the student loan was drawn for passes away, you may be able to get relief through death discharge. You will need a copy of the death certificate. In some cases, alternative documentation may be sufficient.
